Ruth,

You have hit on something here, that could be pertinent to this puzzle.

Lyiubka,

When you get to the phrase (in blue) BETRAYAL OF THE COSSACKS, make sure to click it.

Talking

Hi Ruth! Oh my goodness, I feel like a little kid on Christmas morning! It's 4 in the morning and here I am checking this message board!

Hannia...okay, I had to read that article a couple of times. So does this mean that my grandfather was also in Russia at some point?

He could have been???

The entire family may have also been in Austria ???

Could Grandmother have been protecting her child from repatriation by putting her in an orphanage???

Liubka, submit an inquiry at Bad Arolsen for Grandfather as well. Do you have his birth date?

It was after the first transports of the Cossacks, and their murders aboard those transport trains, that word had gotten back to the DP Camps. According to my parents, all hell broke loose in these camps. Some went as far as to commit suicide.

I don't know where I picked up following excerpt.

In particular, Russian Cossacks of XVth SS Cossack Cavalry Corps of Waffen-SS with their relatives and Ustaše from Yugoslavia were forcibly repatriated from Austria to the Soviet occupation zones of Austria and Germany and to Yugoslavia (Slovenia) respectively.

Often prisoners were summarily executed by receiving Communist authorities, sometimes within earshot of the British. One of the killings at the hand of the Yugoslav Partisans is known as the Bleiburg massacre. The majority were not killed in this incident, however, but were instead sent to prison camps, and actually avoided the gulags.

Hmmmmmm...and I wonder how much a mother would tell a small child about what was happening.

Unfortunately, I don't have a date of birth OR a date of death for my grandfather. I do know my grandmother's date of birth, which was May 5, 1904.

So, maybe my grandfather did NOT die of natural causes, as grandmother told my mother?

Get some rest Liubka!

I am heading for the Catskills. Need to clear my head and talk to some trees.

PS> Grandfather's paperwork might come up w/Grandmother's and the archives will send you that.

Check these sites:
The Cossacks - Google
Trivia on Tourist Sights Cossack Community of New Kuban in New Jersey | Trivia Library
Cossacks USA - Contact
Kuban Cossacks Association, Inc., Library & Museum
THE EARLY COSSACKS
Probably some information could be traced through this envinronment of descendents from Kuban.
I also asked on Ukrainin forum of military history. Воєнно-історичний форум Military Ukraine • Перегляд теми - Козак Курбала
And on Russian Cossack forum (a few members - 70): -> -> : 15-21 .
You can send your request on Cossack newspaper STANITSA: georgynika@yandex.ru or stanitsa@rambler.ru.
Good English site: The expansion of Russian Empire
