село Каспер╕́вц╕ > Зал╕щицький район> Терноп╕льська область > zip code 48653
_______________________________________________________

Kasperivtsi was first documented as a settlement in 1469. It was founded where the
Seret and Tupa Rivers meet in what is Ternopil region today. It was located in the middle
of several prosperous trading routes and in 1619 King Sigmund (Kingdom of Poland) granted
it Magdenburg rights, renamed it Lutomirsk, and conferred the new town w/trading privileges
and permission to hold trading fairs. It quickly became a wealthy town, until the horrific
attacks by the Turks and Tartars led to Lutomirsk's decline and in 1641 it was again called
Kasperivtsi and in 1768 lost its town status. Today Kasperivtsi is clustered with selo/
village Lysychnyky and has a population of 1,100.

The Ternopil region is very interesting to international archealogists.

This specific area, your ancestral village and its immediate environs, is especially so.
Archealogical digs here confirm that there was human settlement here dating back to
late Stone Age - late Paleolithic Age, which coincided with the end of the last Ice Age.
Mounds and remnants from both the Trypillian*** and Rusyn**** cultures are currently
being studied there. Many artifacts from the late Feudal Period have also been found .
The archeological crown came when a treasure throve of ancient Roman coins was
also found here.

Ruth, your photos are terrific !!!

That old church nestled into the hillside on the left in pix #1, is St. George, built in the
16th century. It is built of stone. It is an example of what is frequently referred
to as defensive architecture. There are two watch towers and the arcades have
no windows.

PS> Just getting started, but have to call it quits until tomorrow.

Kasperivtsi

Hi Hannia,
Thanks for the interesting information about this village. I saw the Tripillian Exhibit last year in Toronto at the Royal Ontario Museum and thought some of the sites must have been near Kasperivtsi and Repuzhintsy (my mother's village). I am very interested in all you know about this village. After the fall of the Soviet rule, my uncle wrote to my dad that they were restoring the village church so that must be St. George's. I still have contacts in the village but as I don't speak Ukrainian, communication is difficult and infrequent.

Ruth and Dana,

I checked the SLOWNIK GEOGRAFICZNY KROLESTWA POLSKIEGO and the only thing I did not include about your
Kasperivtsi, was that at the turn of the century, the population was 1,305. I'll see what I can find for more current history.

You may be interested in purchasing some Trypillian style ceramics for someone in family or even yourself ???
I have two vases, both of which were inexpensive, but very beautiful.
Welcome to Trypillian!

Dana,

I am not clear why you are looking for Kryvche records in Vovkivtsy ? The villages are near one another, but have separate churches.

Kryvche (Кривче) is not Krywe (Криве) !!! Or am I missing something?

From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Krzywcze Dolne (Lower) and Krzywcze Gorne (Upper) > Borszczow was the POWIAT (administrative district/county) and Mielnica was the GMINA (judicial/tax district) > Tarnipolskie wojiwodstwo/region > Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From 1919-1938 this region came under Reconstituted Poland's
domain. Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs. Post WW2 Ternopil became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.

Ancient name for Kryvche was Oplakane.

LDS has filmed GC Records for Kryvche.

Still looking for Kasperivtsi. I suspect those may have to be obtained by archival inquiry.

How does one get ahold of these records? Are they pretty easy to decipher? I do not know Ukrainian/Polish but I do know what my last name looks like.

Records (both RC and GC) not at LDS can be obtained thru Archives in Ukraine. The Historical Archives in Lviv covers records older than 100 yrs and the State Archives in Ternopil would cover records that are between 75 and 100 yrs old. In order to obtain records under 75 yrs old, you will need to obtain a Privacy Release thru your nearest Ukrainian Embassy or Consulate. Then you can contact the RAHS (District Archives). Except for RAHS, there is no prepayment at Ukrainian Archives.
