Kot, Kopka/Kofka/Kowka? town: Wyszków
My great-grandmother came to the US around 1910-12 and was about 16. There are very few details about her, but her name was Eva Kot. I know that she worked in a clothing factory in NY as a teenager (had on site bunks where they slept between shifts?). Her father was already in the US but he went back to Austria/Poland to visit family and never returned. The factory boss told my great grandmother that her entire family were butchered by the Russians.
At some point Eva met with my Great Grandfather Mykolaj Jakimicha (Nickoli Yakimicki) and they were married in one of the places they lived before settling in Indiana (Boston, Philly). Nickoli died young and left Eva with my grandpa John and his 4 sisters. Grandpa quit school (12 years old) to support the family and enlisted in the army for better pay as soon as he could (16). Eva's sisters, who she was told had died at the hands of the Russians, appeared at the bus station near our Indiana farm in the 1960's! They had not died, but were in some sort of labor or concentration camp that they had escaped from....at least one had numbers tattooed on her arm. It seems that Eva's mothers maiden name may have been something like "Kopka" (maybe its kowka/kofka?). Her sisters settled in New Jersey. I am working to contact relatives there to see if they have more details. I have found an Ewa Gancarz on the Ellis Island site that seems to correlate with my great grandmother... age, name, dates and family with and back home seems to fit. The home village listed looks to be Wyszkow. Has anybody else researched this area? I find only one Wyszkow on current maps, but there seems to be a few possibly localities on the LDS index. Are these actually different places or the same? I would like to narrow it down and start looking through LDS films hoping for an Eva Kot with a Kopka mothers maiden name. |

GGrandmother's EVDOKIA'S*** ancestral village was founded in 1678. From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Wyszkow was hamlet size. Dolina was both the POWIAT (administrative district/county) and the GMINA (judicial/tax district). The filial GC Church was in Seneczow and the filial RC Church was in Weldzirz. This was the Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From 1919-1938 in the Interwar Period this region came under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs. Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991 when Ukraine became independent. I think that Stanislawow became Ivano-Frankivsk in 1964. Today selo/village Vyshkiv has a population of 651.
***Eva/Yevka was nick for Evdokia. http://www.kawest.com.ua/text/ditlito/all/vuchkiv.jpg |

first... where I accidently said "Gancarz" once in the first message, I meant KOT. Slight brain malfunction while typing that! That name is from the 'other side' of the family.
Would you mind looking up Ewa Kot on ellisisland.org or jewishgen... there are only a couple and the one we are talking about is the 16 year old arriving Jul 05, 1910. The village name is listed as something different from what I wrote. I want to make sure that my guess was well founded before setting out on a wild goose chase. Also...Hannia, thanks for the info. I am confused from your posts though. Are you describing one village in both posts or two different ones? There seems to be one within the modern borders of Poland also. |

Hmmm.. the first one looks like it is probably not the one, as far as family recollection goes she travelled alone and her father was already here.
The second one is the one I saw earlier, but some of this data does not seem to match the scanned manifest. The birthplace name seems way off from what is written...actually I think the birthplace column was blank but the village name that she came from and where her mother Hannia is listed as living on the manifest did not match that name even closely. Either way, it may be prudent to look at both. One thing I've learned doing family history research is that family memories are often pretty far off the mark! |

I think it is the first one. When I looked at the actual manifest I think the transcription is wrong. I think the reference is to her mother she left behind in her village. You will need to examine the manifest carefully.
