Document is dated 1958 and she says it is Poland ????

Maybe it was Drohojow (Drohojiv transliterated/sounds like from Ukrainian) > Pzremysl > Poland. It was a predominantly Ukrainian village before 1947.

Alphabetical listinf of Places in World that start with Droh

Joe, have you dug up any more records? What about where she attended church???? Her children's Baptismal records might give you some clues?

She moved here before the first world war and had 0 contact with anyone back in the 'old country'. She likely would've had no idea where the village was with respect to changing borders but probably assumed it was poland because in the usa there were many poles around and their language was the same.

She came over with her father when she was relatively young and he went back to get the rest of the family but never returned so she basically raised herself from early teen years on. Her son and daughters were all born and raised here in indiana. They attended a nearby catholic church here (I believe her husband was baptized catholic even though he was ruthenian) and I have no idea what religion she was baptized. This social security thing is the only bit of info I've ever been able to find.

I also had Dobropole as a guess before you mentioned it. I will look here at the other suggestion now.

Exclamation Meaning of greek catholic = byzantine rite

GREEK CATHOLIC = BYZANTINE RITE is one of 20+ rites within the Catholic Church. Not all are listed here.

new information, progress

I have new information that may be putting me on track!

I talked to the church where eva's son (my grandfather) was baptized. It listed her maiden name as KOT. My uncle dug out the deed/abstract for the grandmas house and found her maiden name listed as KOT, and lastly, family stories say this was her maiden name too. So, it looks like social security had a mistake on the form.

Now, we know that Eva came over with the name "eva kot", had a father with a name similar to 'william' and a mother with the name of or similar to 'anna'. Oral history says that she travelled here with her father and the sisters/mother stayed back. Obviously, that is not gospel.

I don't have access to the Hamburg, Philly, Baltimore, etc passenger lists. But I'm going to grab a month of ancestry.com world.

I did find the following on ellis island- a single Kot, around grandmas age, different first name from Dobromil, Galicia. It may be completely unrelated, but there may be a connection of some sort that becomes clear later.

First Name: Anna
Last Name: Kot
Ethnicity: Austria-Ruthenian
Last Place of Residence: Dobromil, Galicia
Date of Arrival: May 13, 1912
Age at Arrival: 17y Gender: F Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: George Washington
Port of Departure: Bremen
Manifest Line Number: 0007

By coincidence, Dobromyl was the first name that came to my mind when I first saw your document - probably simply because I have been to this nice small town.

Joe, so far we have all these possibilities, but no cigar.

I saw about 15+candidates for your Ewa Kot listed on Ancestry.com. Kot was a very common name to be found in loads of immigration records. Ancestry offers a 14 day free trial period. You could surely examine the 15 Ewa's listed in less than 14 days.
