M,

Shubo is a surname found in Zakarpatska Ukraine. I found at least 10 in Uzhorod and Munkachevo.

During WW1 the Czar had young Rusyns from Zakarpathia shipped to Siberia gulags ???

PS> I was watching Planet Earth yesterday. Those Amur Leopards in Amur-Ussuri region are exquisite.
They're considered the rarest cat in the wild.

Wow! Interesting...unfortunatly,they don't know much about how their ancestors got to Ussury. Was there any settler movement from Zakarpatia to Far East before WW1?

The Amur-Ussury region was not used as penal colonies nor by the Romanovs, neither the Reds,it actually is pretty rich area.At that time there might have been an attempt by the Romanovs to settle those regions.Well,in any event, now it done puzzled the heck out of me,so I will get to the bottom of it,comes hell or high blood pressure

PS.They have tigers over there, too. But they never say "tiger",they say "Him",'couse they believe if you call Him
by name,He'll come for you.

Chinese ceded Ussuri region of Far East to Russian Empire in 1860's.

Siberia was never a great magnet for free settlement. Incarceration and exile was the major mode of populating the region
and developing its economy.

The Rusyn from Zakarpathia were not migrant workers. Who do you think built the Ussuri railroad for late Imperial Russian Empire?

I have a list of gulags someplace in my vast assortment of files. I'll post it here as soon as I find them.

Those were not called "GULag" back then, although they were the same thing, they called it "Katorga".
GULag is actually a Soviet abbreviation, stands for

G-Glavnoe(Main)
U-Upravlenie (Menegment)
Lag-Lagerey(Camps)

So,it's "Main Menegment of Camps.

"Katorga" was what they used to call my Island,too...
