Searching for family. Surnames: PIATAK, KARANKO, KOROLYK. Most needed is Jozef Piatak
born abt. 1886-1888 in Mosciska. Left Mother Ewa. Jozef may have had a step-father Michael Wegier.Jozef was believed to have a brother left in Austria.

Maria Karanko was daughter of Joannes Karanko & Irena Korolyk. born: Mar. 8, 1880 Starzawa No. 112.

since you know the village you should look for the cadastral records from lds in mircrofilms

Thanks for your reply. I have located Karanko's in LDS records...but nothing for Piatak....LDS has not yet filmed the area or years. I have a researcher looking in that area...but am totally disappointed as she has found nothing. I do not know who else to contact in that area to search for me.

LDS has filmed all available books
Your books are either no more existent ( were destroyed, burnt, etc) or kept in Registry Offices - which will then forward them after a 75-year period to Justice Administration.

Hi: Writing is worth a try...any chance you can supply proper address.? I believe the Starzawa I need is in the Stubno Commune, Mosciska county. I did write to Central State Archives of Ukraine, City of Lviv & they informed me no birth record for Jozef Piatak. A friend mentioned to me that Ukrainian towns have "Zahs/Rahs that may be able to help...but I do not know of Zahs/Rahs. I also had no luck with Warsaw records.

You were very lucky to receive a reply from our Lviv Archives - they usually neglect any inquires. They must have told you - what they mean by no birth record - no books with the years required, or no such entry for the date you gave?

State Archives of Lviv stated in letter: That there is no birth record for Jozef Piatak in the Greek Catholic parish records for Mostyska (Mosciska) in the birth registers for 1868-1901. I have been going round & round for 3 years...with no luck. I have been advised that he must be in the Starzawa records - & possibly they are not looking very hard for him. All I have found on him is that his mothers name was Ewa (no maiden name) & that he left a step father Michael Wegier. So, many possiblities exist. Did his mother remarry? Was he illegitimate? Was he adopted? Lviv also stated they found no record either for a Michael Wegier. Do not know where to inquire next. Thanks for your help.
