Ganczar vs Gancarz
Hello Larry.
I do hope you are still checking this forum, I just came across it yesterday and was very excited to read your posting. I think we might be related. My great grandmother's maiden name was Ganczar, or Gancarz, as I've got it written on some documents. She and my great grandfather Stephanus Kuzmak were on the same ship you speak of that your Grandmother Eva Ganczarz was on. And they farmed at Fork River. On my documents, the ship manifest records, it shows an Eva Gancarz at the age 18 in 1899, travelling with her parents Michal and Agatae (Agnes) and another child aged 17, the name looks like it might be Jadwiga. This would make her birthdate in 1979/1880, which is close to the year you have for your grandmother. Could this be the same person? As an aside, I am born on March 10th too, so today is our birthdays; as well, I was born on my grandmother Kuzmak's birthday, and she had a twin brother.) Their listing is right above my great grand parents; my grandfther was also born in Stare Siolo in 1895 and was 3.5 years old when they sailed to Canada. I believe this Eva shown on the ship manifest is my g.grandmother's younger sister, as my g.grandmother Maria was 26 years old when they sailed to Canada. There is more to tell and compare, but wait to hear from you first. Susan |

Hello Susan,
The Eva Ganczar you identified on the ship's list is in fact my Grandmother. However, she travelled with relatives, not parents. The ship's log appears to be ordered by family groups travelling together rather than say alphabetical. That implys that your Grandparents and my Grandmother are related. As a child, I visited Ganczar relatives in Sifton quite often, but never Fork River, although they may have driven down for weddings and other family get-togethers. I will add Stephanus and Maria to my Ganczar family grouping. As a note, they all arrived at Halifax Pier 2, which then burnt down about 1918, and was replaced by Pier 21. I have fairly extensive Ganczar family records for Stare Siolo and the Dauphin/Sifton area that I could share with you via e-mail. Nice to hear from you, Larry |
