Nanczulka Welyka & Nanczulka Mala (Stary Sambir District)
Would anyone be familiar with these villages i.e. their history, ethnic background of the inhabitants etc.? My family lived in Nanczulka Welyka from pre-1780 until migrating to Radauti in Bukovina in about 1860. In 2000 I travelled to Nanczulka and spoke with the village administrator, but at the time didn't have enough background to ask the right questions. Right now I am extracting my ancestors from the Nanczulka church records, but these seem to only go back as far as 1784. Does anyone know if earlier records exist. I am very appreciative of any additional information on these villages.

From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Nanczulka Wielka was hamlet size. The filial GC Church was in
Potok Wielki and the filial RC Church was in Stary Sambor. Stary Sambor was both the the Powiat (county- administrative district) and the GMINA ( judicial-tax district). Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The village was first mentioned in documents in 1539. It was founded on the Linynka River. In 1949 it was renamed Velykosilia and shared its Village Administration and Post Ofc w/Potik (formerly Potok), Sosnivka and Tykha. I will check the old gazetteers to see what other history I can dig up for you. ___________________________________________________________________ I assume you are extracting data from following LDS films? You can't expect to find very much before end of 18th century, which is when Austro-Hungary mandated that metrykal records be kept by govt. If your ancestral families were serfs, chances for documentation are not good. You could try checking w/the pastor in Potik and ask whether he has access to any very, very old Church Registers, but I would be surprised if there any. You should also look into researching Cadastral Records/tax- property- school records for your ancestral village. Those are generally available at the Archives only. Dear Hannia
Thank you very much for the information and suggestions. I'm working my way now through the last of the LDS films you referenced and have found my family from the earliest period (1780s up to about 1860 when they seem to have relocated to Radautz where my g-grandfather married and raised a family before emmigrating to Canada). The family I'm researching in Nanczulka is Toustiak (spelled "Tosczak" since before leaving Bukovina in 1901). I'll pursue the cadastral records as you suggest in the hopes of finding more information. I have never seen any reference to this name since I began researching it 30+ years ago. In North America all with surname "Tosczak" are related to my family. Do you happen to know, or know how I might determine if Nanczulka was a Boyko village? Regards, Brian Tosczak |

There is a wonderful demographic map of Halyczyna showing exactly where the Bojko resided, but I can't find it in my files.
Meanwhile as I continue looking, u might be interested in this one. Bukovina History - Ethnic Map |
