Does "Kalenick" phonetically sound like a common Ukrainian name?
Kalenik's parents are listed as Wakula Somach (deceased by 1914) and Paraskewija Danisewna (also deceased by 1914). Ahafija's parents are listed as Gabriel Shusick and Ahafija Karpick, both alive in 1914.

Kalenik is not a common given name for male. The root word KALYNA is a variant cranberry bush that grows appx 5 meters tall, w/flat white flowers and deep red berries and is used as herbal medication for a variety of problems. It is quite bitter. Kalyna grows in the woods across all of Ukraine. To Eastern Slavs during pagan times, it symbolized beauty, love and purity. Today it symbolizes Ukraine itself.
Wakula is name of character used by both Chajkovsky and Rimsky-Korsokov in their operas.
Paraskejiva is directly off the Orthodox Calender. This was a very common name in that timeframe.
Gabriel was more likely originally Havrylo.
