Researching: Huckan from Repuzhintsy, Bukovina
I have been researching my maternal grandmother's family whose name was anglicised to Huckan but pronounced Hutskan in Ukrainian. I am wondering how the name would be spelled in Ukrainian? гуцкан ? They were Ukrainian and Orthodox. These were the siblings:
John or Iwan came to Canada @ 1908 to Manitoba Marya or Maria came 1911 (married name Zarecki) to Sclater, MB Nikolaj came 1913 and returned to Repuzhintsy Michalena came @ 1914 to Manitoba and died in 1918 in a hotel fire Any help would be appreciated. Ruth |

Lemko and Irene:
Thank you so much for the map and pictures links. I have seen the map before but it's good to have the on-line link. Irene - the photos of the village are wonderful. I did visit briefly with my parents in 1984 but I was naive and didn't ask the right questions (I don't speak Ukrainian) or take the right photos of the area. I think there are descendents of Nikolaj still in the village. I guess I could check the white pages for the village. One of Nikolaj's daughters was still there in 1984 (Stefka) but it's unlikely she's alive now. thank you both for your assistance, Ruth |

Was this ancestor a Hutsul?

Lemko,
I don't know if they were Hutsul or not. I've only been rearching in Canada. I haven't traced them back in the civil or church records yet. Maybe that will give me a clue. The name is suggestive though, isn't it? I'll ask my mother (who is still mentally good at nearly 95) if she ever heard of her mother's family being Hutsul. What do you think about the name? Have you ever heard of it before? Ruth |

Sorry, I have not heard of that name but im no expert on the Bukovina province. Have you looked at Census records by chance?
Family is the best source of information. Ask her that. If she says no to Hutsul ask Rusyn (rus-seen) almost sounds like russian. I hope you find the answer you are looking for. If your mother knows any words in the language, that too could help determine ethnic origin. Do you know the name of the Church they went to in Canada and what kind of christianity it was?
