Slobodians from Werbycia
My Grandmother Mary Slobodian Hrabar came from the town of Werbycia. So did her sisters- Sonia, Catherine, and Anna- and her brother Bohdan. Their parents were Mykyta Slobodian and Eudochia Semenka.
Does anyone know where to find Werbycia? Thanks, =Pete= |

Verba means willow tree and its descriptive variants are a common name for
villages in Ukraine. There are three+ such same-named villages in the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivska & Chernivtsi regions. (Most immigrants took spouses that had emigrated from their own districts or regions. This helped create a comfort zone for them, since they were so far away from their homeland.) |

Slobodians from Werbycia
I appreciate your analytical insight, Hannia.
Here are their spouse's origins, hoping that may help locate the right willow. Mary married Ivan Hrabar from Pomoneta. Sonia married John Mykytka from Zaliniw. Katherine married Konrad Chmylowsky. Anna married Teodor Nakonezcny from 'Wierzbica' Austria which sounds pretty close to home. |

Using Shtetlseeker.com:
Pomoniata (Помонята) coordinates 49.24-24.26. Verbytsya (Вербиця) is located 1.9 miles SW of Pomoniata. Verbytsa coordinates 49.23-24.24. Zalanuv (Заланив) is located 6.4 miles NE of Pomoniata. Coordinates 49.28-24.32. All are hamlet size. __________________________________________________________________________ During Austro-Hungarian and Interwar Periods, Zalanuv (Заланив in Ukrainian) was called Zalanow in Polish > Rohatyn was both powiat and gmina. It was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village/selo w/its own GC church. The filial RC Church was in Rohatyn. Verbytsya (Вербиця), less than 2 miles away, is actually located in Zhydachivskij (Zhydachiv) raion > Lvivska oblast/region. ![]() http://proteplo.com.ua/?c=maps&i=102...=generate&q=75 Last edited by Hannia; 17th August 2008 at 23:13. |
