Beszlej Family - Kosovets, Gorodek
Hello,
I am truly excited about this forum and am amazed about how much information people are getting in researching their genealogy. I am simply in awe of Hannia, whoever you are!!! After much frustration in researching, I have finally found this forum and hope that I might have better luck here. My great-grandfather, Basil Beszlej was born in Kosovets (then Kossowiec, Galicia) on Mar. 22, 1875, as son of Nikolai and Pelagia Beszlej (nee Tkacz). My great-grandfather died in Vienna in 1950. I am really hopeful that I could find out more about his heritage and his parents and ancestors. I know very little about his life in Kosovets. He left around 1900 and lived in Vienna for about 30 years before moving to Czerce (District Jaroslaw, now Poland). I hope that someone can give me some suggestions about finding out more about the Beszlej family. I have no idea if he had any brothers or sisters. I know that his father was born Dec. 18, 1844 in Kosovets but not much else about the family, particularly about my great-great grandmother. Does anyone know how I might find out if there are any people with the name of Beszlej living in Kosovets today? I would love to find some living relatives and would be eager to to go to Ukraine. Unfortunately, I don't speak Ukrainian, so it is a challenge for me to read the cyrilic writing and do much research on site. As well, any suggestions how I could go about researching into my great-grandfather's roots in Kosovets, to go back in history and find out more about his ancestors? I tried FamilySearch.Org, however, I am not quite sure how to access their records. Finally, does anyone have any ideas where I could research the actual history of the name Beszlej??? It doesn't sound very Ukrainian to me, to be quite honest. Any help or suggestions would be truly appreciated, I am very eager to find out more about my great-grandfather and my ancestors!!! Thanks for reading my post! |

At that time it belonged to the Kingdom of Poland. It suffered several ferocious attacks from the Tartars. From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Kosowiec was hamlet size, as it is today. Grodek Jagiellionski was both the POWIAT/ county-adm district and the GMINA/judicial-tax district > Lwow was the regional capital > Galicia/Halyczyna Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The filial Roman Catholic Church for the hamlet was Grodek-Jagiellionski and the filial Greek Catholic Church was in Lubien Wielki**. From 1919-1939 (Interwar Period) your ancestral region became a part of Reconstituted Poland, which had technically not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs. Except for Halyczyna, note all previous place names are official Polish names. Post WW2 Halyczyna became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when it became independent. ** Lubien Wielki was settled in the 13th century and reknowned for its sulfur baths. Wealthy Europeans came here for spa holidays. TODAY selo/village Kosivetz (Кос╕вець) remains hamlet size w/a population of 348 souls > Horodotskij raion/district > Lvivska oblast/region > Ukraine, zip code 81555. It shares a post ofc w/selo Velykij Lubien. _________________________________________________ At a later date when you have put a family tree together, consider contacting the Village Administration re any surviving relatives still residing in the village. The surname Бешлей is intriguing. It is Ukrainian, but
I can't figure out the root. At first I thought it was possibly Tartar or Turkish, but just am not sure. PS> You have some heavywgts in your clan??? ![]() Beshley Vasyl V. / Бешлей Василь В. Chair of Astrophysics of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv The V is patronymic for given name Vasyl. |

They have no records in The Regional Archives - they are in the Registry Office in Doroshenko St. And to get any reply from them you should sned your inquiry together with its certified and notarized translation, and a document to confirm you a relative of the preson you are interested in!
PS I once used to pick up mushrooms near this village... Hannia, why haven't you checked your favourite source? There are 9 Beshlei persons registered in Lubin Velyky. Last edited by IreneLviv; 10th August 2008 at 00:21. |

Thank you Hannia,
I am truly amazed by you! The information is marvellous and certainly a welcome addition of the facts about my ancestry that I am collecting. A question about the LDS films? I gather I need to view these at an LDS research center? Or am I missing something on their site? Salt Lake, unfortunately, isn't an option as it is a bit too far away. But thanks for that information. I am actually surprised that Kosovets exists to this very day. As to the name Beszlej, I suspect, but this is merely a guess without any evidence that it might be Hungarian. A Beszlej in as an Astro-Physicist? That would certainly be impressive. Clan, that's funny. Right now, we're a pretty small clan, so finding some relatives would be exciting. Do you know where I might be able to hire a person for a day or two to act as a translator if I go to Kosovets myself? Any contacts in the Lviv area of someone reputable would be welcome. Once again, thanks for your reply!!! Any other info would be sincerely appreciated.http://www.ukraine.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif |

Irina, thanks for your information. Is the office you are referring to, the State Regional Archives that Hannia mentioned?
Mushroom picking??? What is the area like? I gather there must be some forests there. The Beszlejs in Lubien Vielky might be relatives. Do you have any idea what the best way to be would to try to contact them? Thanks so much for your help! |
