LDS Poland

Irene

Thanks kindly for the additional info on LDS. That's where I will start. I want to check if my great-grandfather had any siblings or if his father did, so this will most likely prove to be the most useful resource to start.http://www.ukraine.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

What livelihood are you talking about Hannia?
Hedgehog: To obtain documents in the Lviv Registry office you only need to fill in their Inquiry form and attach a notarized document confirming your relationship with the person in question.

What's in a name?

Hannia, would you have any useful resource where I might research the root of the name Beszlej further? That would sincerely be appreciated!

Lightbulb Meaning of Surname, Beszlej ???

I tripped on something very interesting.

How does Gypsy Origin strike you?

In the Gypsy language BESH signifies TO SIT and LEY signifies DOWN.

In any Roma encampment BESHLEY is considered an invitation to sit down.
________________________________________________________

From the little reading I have done so far, Gypsies in Ukraine were predominantly
migrant musicians/bands that wandered out of the Carpathians and provided
entertainment from one village to another during the warm months.

It looks like some of them even settled down in Ukraine. In the Ternopil region
of Ukraine there is a village actually called Tsyhany/Gypsies. In Polish the village
was called Cygany.

You worked in Romania, so you are probably familiar w/the Roma culture.

Roma???

Wow, Hannia, that's certainly a notion I never entertained. I can tell you that Roma are not very popular people anywhere, particularly in Romania. I'll have to explore this further. Thanks for the information, I appreciate that. In another thread, I posted a request about Koszudej? Any ideas if this is a Ukrainian name? I sincerely appreciate your efforts and help!!!

Church Records

Does anyone know where I might find Polish church records - Greek Catholic Church for the village of Czerce, located outside of Sieniewa, near Jaroslaw, close to the Ukrainian border (Przemysl). LDS does not seem to have any records. I have tried some churches in Sieniewa and Jaroslaw but they aren't very helpful and claim to have no clue where these records may have gone to. Any help would be appreciated.

If you are of Roma roots,
this movie: 'The Pied Piper of Hutzovina'
may be of interest to you.

Good Luck on your continued search!
