LDS Books

Thanks, Irina, that would be wonderful. I am not quite sure when I could get to the Lviv area. Right now, I work in Western Poland, on a contractual basis, so I would like to take the opportunity to travel to Ukraine while I am in the region, as this is the last year of my contract. But I would certainly take you up on your offer and sincerely your offer!!!

I have a question regarding the LDS books. I gather these are not accessible electronically but are on microfiche stored at LDS centers? Unfortunately there are none in Poland, so it will need to wait until I can get to a city that has a family center. Have you actually ever seen an actual record. I have a copy of my great-grandfather's baptism certifcate issued in Latin. Is this what I would expect to find if I looked at LDS records? If anyone has ever done this, I would like to hear from you about the experience.

I have just explored the link provided by Hannia about the LDS books and am a little clearer on this now. Thank you!!! I would appreciate, however, if anyone can tell me a bit more on what to expect. Are these just copies of all certificates issued or are they indexed in some fashion????

Thanks

There are some LDS centres in Poland
e.g in Warsaw:
38 Nowy Swiat
Phone: 48-228 276 311
Hours: Tues- Fri 10.00-20.00, Sat 10.00-17.00
Re films- these are complete books microfilmed from originals which are kept in the Lviv Historical Archives ( I mean those on your village)
You can see the original books in Lviv if you visit these archives - it usu takes them 3 days to deliver ordered documents from their depository.

Hedgehog,

Before tackling District Archives/RAHS (records kept under 75 yrs old mostly),
start w/LDS.

If indeed there are no records for Kosovets at Regional level (75-100 yrs old),
as has been suggested, you will have to obtain a PRIVACY RELEASE thru either
Ukrainian Embassy or Consulate in nearest you, in order to get copies of specific
records from RAHS. At RAHS level, they do no research.
Current cost to obtain Privacy Release documentation is appx $100 USD.

LDS has all FYI info available on site.

An exc resource for Halyczyna/Galicia Research:
Genealogy of Halychyna and Eastern Galicia
Genealogy of Halychyna and Eastern Galicia

Notice that I didn't even start to explain the 30 yr period in Vienna and
final settlement in Jaroslaw. Family legend is frequently just that. Let's
wait and see where records will lead you.

Irene has only been a poster here for a short time, so make sure
to get proper references. I cannot recommend her, because I do not
know her. I do know she used a source I provided her to create
an opportunity for herself w/you.

Bare in mind that given the Ukrainian economy it is very easy to acquire
relatives in Ukraine, that may not be your own. Be careful.

In order to view just how frequently your surname shows up on
Google.com, add Ukrainian under Language Tools. Submit your
surname using Cyrillic.

Why are you so suspicious Hannia? Hedgehog did not ask you for your recommendations as I pose no threat to him - he is well protected with his spines!
Why you think Ukrainians are eager to declare any foreigner bearing the same name their relative? This is ridiculous!

And then -you have never replied re bearing a grudge against me

Irene, you are looking for an argument in which I do not want to participate.
I don't have any time to hold any grudges. You might consider growing a
sense of humor and not taking everything so literally.

I haven't been able to answer you until now. At the suggestion of Admin I did
change browsers and now I can read all messages and respond to all questions.

If you check my history here, you will find that I have been at this for a number
of yrs. I have seen all kinds of scams tried.

Yes, indeed it is very easy to acquire relatives in Ukraine that might not be one's own.
And then it can get hard to get rid of them. It is safer to be cautious now, than sorry later.

I, unlike you, do not charge for any information or services rendered.
I merely offer free advice.

On the side of precaution, it is wise to ask for references of anyone who contracts their
services for money. Since currently this is your livelihood, I'm sure you will have no trouble
providing references when asked.

Hedgehog,

RAHS are District Archives. With some exceptions, they generally only hold records under
75 yrs old. As per Int'l Privacy Laws, you will need to obtain a PRIVACY RELEASE thru
Ukrainian Embassy or Consulate in order to obtain "specific" records from RAHS.

The Regional/Oblast Archives hold records 75-100 yrs old and the Historical Archives
in Lviv cover mostly records over 100 yrs old and require no Privacy Release Documentation.
These archives are closed in August for summer holiday.

Another good thing to know is that Ukrainian Archives are free to native Ukrainians.

Smile Lds

Hannia,

Thanks for your words of caution. Finding a slew of relatives that might not be such at all has crossed my mind as is, and I am not looking to make new friends in the Ukraine. I have enough of those. Having spent several years working in Romania though, I can understand the concept of hardship and I am sympathetic. People in rural areas endure particular hardships. I will go with LDS first when I have a chance to get to a family center. I am more interested in going back as far as possible in time to discover my roots. If, along the way, I can find some genuine relatives, then that will be an added bonus. Do you have any recommendations how I could go about researching the actual root of the name Beszlej? I have tried the Internet, but as it isn't an Anglo name I am not having much success.

I have another question about finding my great-great uncle on my great-grandmother's side, so I will will post that in a separate thread. Thanks again!http://www.ukraine.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif
