KOSHMAN Success story!!! -Sokal, Ukraine

begbie
Hello Hannia
How are you doing? Just as busy as ever , I see. Wow, your store house of information is amazing!!

Just a short note to let you know that I have made contact with Koshman relatives in Sokal, such happinesss on both sides for us all. They did not know of relatives in Canada, and my family has grown to about 200 + since my grand parents and their six children , emigrated to Canada in May of 1913.

Just a note to the readers of this forum.

re: spelling of surnames

At present my name is spelled KOSHMAN, but the passenger ships list of 1913 , spells our name as KOSZMAN, for my grand parents and their six children. But they changed the spelling to KOSHMAN sometimes in the 1920's.

So, naturally , I assumed that KOSZMAN is the Ukrainian spelling. But the reason for this spelling is that Poland was governing this area of behalf of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1913) so when my family received their travel documents, our name had the SZ used instead of the SH.

But , as I have just found out, my relatives in Ukraine today spell their name as SH ie, KOSHMAN.

Therefore, I would think that a lot of Ukrainian surnames, would have been "Polinized", so to speak, and not intentianally, as that was the language of the gov't during these times. And some of these spellings exist to today. I have found a KOSZMAN family in Saskatchewan (not related as yet, but from nearby Sinkiv) and they still use the SZ spelling. There are also many KOSHMAN spellings out there.

Any how, just a short note of how the spelling of names evolved .

I am learning Ukrainian and the Cyrillic alpahbet, and have made a conclusion about another evolution of name spelling.
My mothers maiden name is HNATIUK. I often wondered, how did this spelling come about.
As you know the Cyrillic H, is N sounding, in English, thus NA TIK or NAT CHUK, as is said today.
Then I find out a few years ago, that my moms dad, my grandfather, changed his name from HNATIW to HNATIUK, but thats another story. Still trying to find where the HNATIWS, emigrated from in Ukraine, for my mothers side of the tree.

I have traced my fathers side back to 1790, my gr gr gr grand parents, Tymotheri and Maria (Koczkowska), from the villages around Sokal. Wojslawice (Voyslavitse, today), Tudorkowice, Uhrynow, Horodlowice, Nusmice etc.
I have found my grand fathers brothers and sisters , their marriages , and children. My grand fathers parents and his aunts and uncles and families.
All of this info was unknown to us here in Canada, as there was no communication between the families since they left in 1913, until now 2008 -----reconnecting after 95 years.!!!!

I have been researching for the past 12 years, and only found the passenger list, two years ago, and contacted family in Sokal during the past 6 months.

So , for those of you searching, there are many dead ends, but persevere, and you will find the answers you are looking for.

I looked thru hours and hours of LDS tapes, and was getting pretty discouraged, when BAM! there it was- KOSZMAN NAME , JUMPING OUT OF THE PAGE AT ME!!!! I must have sat there, staring at that entry for 5 mins!!! That was my EUREKA!!! moment.

Any how , I must be getting off to work.
Thank you Hannia, for all your invaluable information

and Happy Genealogy hunting to everyone else!!!

Bob

Hi Hannia

I am planning to go next year, so I should be able to learn a lot more of my relatives from them, as they don't speak English, and I am just learning Ukrainian. So it is a slow process of exchanging information and learning about each other.

Maybe Piotr K. and I might make it at the same time.!

I thought I might elicit some comments on my conclusions re: name spelling / changes.
Any thoughts.

I have received a pic of a headstone of a Koshman ancestor, and the spelling is quite evident the spelling in Cyrillic is .....KOWMAH.... the W , being a sh.

I have also found out that the Koshman family was resettled in 1946 to Ternopil and Chervonograd (Krystynopol). I have looked at your white pages posting, but cannot make it thru the language barrier. Are there Koshman numbers in these towns.?

Thank you
Best of health to you

Bob

A couple of interesting points to note here;

1. Bob Koshman is related to a branch on the Konasiewicz family, though not my particular branch.

2. I made contact with a lady in Poland while researching the surname "Kinach". To my amazement her mother (who is in her 90's) was from Sokal and knew the Konasiewicz family. Even more amazing was the news that my grandfather was her godfather and that her great grandfather was god father to my grandfather.
