I have found a record relating to my family. In Montreal QC in 1939, a priest named Musielak noted the groom as being the son of Raphael Swiderski of Zabojkow, Tarnopol district, Poland. The 'o' in Zabojkow had the accent on it. The marriage record is in French.
I am hoping that with these clues, someone will be able to suggest the correct spelling for the town, since I have not been able to find this spelling, or anything I recognize as close to it, on any of the maps circa that time that I have found. I speak neither Polish nor Ukranian. Thanks |

Hello gendelivery 1,
From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Zabojkow (means BEHIND THE BOYKOS) was hamlet size. The filial Greek Catholic Church was in Chodaczow Wielki and the filial Roman Catholic Church was in Kozlow. Tarnopil was both the POWIAT/administrative district-county and the GMINA/judicial-tax district. This was the Tarnopilskie wojowodstwo/region > Galicia/Halyczyna (in Ukr)Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE. From 1919-1939 Galicia/Halyczyna came under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs. All previous place names, unless otherwise indicated are in official Polish. Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent. TODAY selo/village Zaboyky (Забойки) still exists and has a population of appx 450 residents, and is part of a village administration of several small villages w/total population of appx 1000 > Ternopilskij raion/district > Ternopilska (Ternopil) oblast/region> Ukraine, latest zip code 47721. Villagers in Zaboyky use the post ofc/poshta in Pochapyntsi (Почапинц╕). The Ruda River flows thru Zaboyky. At the turn of the century there were several flour mills in the village. Poles started colonizing the village in 1890. In 1944 appx a third of village structures were razed. There is a cemetery devoted to the WW2 Zaboyky victims. Based on the given name, my guess is that Raphael was Polish & RC ??? Important resource for Galicia/Halyczyna researchers. Map suggestions included. Hello Hannia,
Thanks for the detailed description of the town and its history. I am seeking records for (and relatives of, if possible) my great-grandfather, Klemens Swiderski, who was Polish and RC and my great-grandmother Petronela Peleckata, who may have been Ukranian. At least one of their children was born in Poland before they emigrated, perhaps my grandmother Tekla also. Klemens' brother Rafael came from that village; I am hoping Klemens lived there also. I have been searching for my 'Polish roots' off and on for 9 years now...it is nice to finally be making some progress. Thanks for the links. Martine |

Hannia,
Someone on another board had already posted that there were no LDS films for this town/parish. I would never have re-checked. I will re-post your info there, in case someone else ever seeks it there. Thank you for taking that extra step; there is an LDS Family Centre here in town where I can request the films. I've never worked with them before, but I can learn. I had already found the Halgal pages and am slowly making my way through them; I hadn't gotten to the re-patriation pages yet. If I correctly interpret what you are saying, the chances are slim that I would now have any living relatives in Zaboyki? As a North American, it is hard to imagine the circumstances under which so many people lived, and continue to live. Martine |

Martine,
Nine years ago many of these research resources did not exist. Today it has become somewhat easier to access data. If you run into any problems, you know where you can find me. If you need local help in either Ukraine or Poland, we have members here, who charge fair rates for translation and research. ![]() _____________________________________________________ HOW-TO's re performing LDS research FamilySearch.org - FAQ Last edited by Hannia; 11th May 2008 at 02:49. |
