Pankow from Czarnokonce/Federowich from Skoviatyn

My husbands's paternal grandfather, John Pankow, was born on June 6, 1880 in Czarnokonce Wielkie, Husintyn, Galicia, Austria. (I am not sure of the spelling). His parents were Gregory Pankow and Marie Hewak and he lists them on his 1940 National Registration as being born in Czarnokonce, Austria. His religion was Greek Catholic. His parents both died when he was 8and at age 11 his older brother died as he slept beside him. John served in the Austrian Army from 1901 - 1904 in the 11th Battalion as a soldier. During his time in the Austrian Army he took up the trade of tailoring. John Pankow sailed from Antwerp and arrived in Canada May 10, 1905 aboard the ship Montrose. We do believe he left behind a sister in Ukraine but we have no information on her or her family. On the 1940 Registration John says he was brought up on a farm and family stories say that his family had a vineyard.

John Pankow married Maria Federawicz (born Sept. 15, 1896 in Skoviatyn, Borczezow, Poland, Austria) in Manitoba November 26, 1911. Maria's parents were Wicenty Federovitch (born 1856 in Skoviatyn, Borshchiv, Galicia, Austria) and Katherine/Karolina Sikorsky (born Aug. 1859 or 1866 in Skoviatyn, Borszczow, Poland. Vincent and Katherine arrived in Canada on S.S. Bulgaria on April 25, 1898. Their children that came with them were Aniela, Joseph, Francisca, and Marianna. Their religion was Roman Catholic.

That is basically all the information we have on John and Mary in the Ukraine. We are interested in tracing John and his family in Ukraine and looking for suggestions on where to start. Any information on Czarnokonce and Skoviatyn would be most appreciated. Do you think we have a chance on finding any information or is it too long ago?

Pankow/Pankiv, Hewak, Federawicz/Federowicz, Sikorsky

This inquiry is pretty straight forward, but we will do this in parts.

John Pankow (originally Ivan Pankiv/╤ван Панк╕в) dob 6/6/1880 in
large village, Czarnokonce Wielkie (translates to Big Blackend) > Husyatyn.
Parents, Gregory (Hryhorij - nick, Hrych or Hrychko) & Marie Hewak (Marya).

Cholera was a major killer throughout this area in late 80's/early 90's.

Ivan had a sister ??? We do not know her given name ???

Using LDS films below, you should be able to ascertain all sibling
names, including sister left behind in village.

From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Czarnokonce Wielkie was a
large village w/both a GC and RC Chruch. Husyatyn was both the

Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. From 1919-1939 the Tarnipol Region came under
Reconstituted Poland's domain. During this time frame Kopyczynce
was the powiat. All previous names are transliterated from Polish.
Post WW2 this region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet
domain, until 1991, when Ukraine became independent.

TODAY selo/village Velyki Chornokintsi (Велик╕ Чорнок╕нц╕) still exists

Hannia,

Thank you.

I will make arrrangements to view the microfilm you have mentioned. I assume the names, Pankow and Hewak, will not be in English as you have mentioned the languages on the microfilm. Do you have any idea what they will appear as?

Again, thank you for your help.

Sharon

Language of Ukrainian Vital Records

Church Records are very likely in Latin. Easy enough to see similarity. It's only the very old records (18th c)
that utilize Church Slovanic > Cyrillic.

Ivan Pankiv = ╤ван Панк╕в
Marya Hewak = Мар╕я Гевак
Hryhorij = Григорий

Mathew Bielawa has a page devoted to records, which includes explanation
and help w/language and format of records. Read thru everything on that
page and you will be fore-armed.

HalGal: Vital Records

PS> Just don't forget to bring a magnifying glass.

Sharon,

It was too easy. I should know by now, that there is always
a hitch.

From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Skowiatyn was
predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own GC
Church. THE FILIAL ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH WAS IN
KOROLOWKA.
Borszczow was both the powiat and the gmina >
Tarnopolskie wojiwodstwo/region. All other info same as in
post re Pankow family. I am not sure if Korolowka has been filmed. I do know that the
physical records (1600-1948) are in the Central State Archives of
Lviv. It is not clear if this village has been filmed by LDS. Check
w/center for below and ask whether Korolowka is available.

Archival register to record group 485, series 1 - FHL INTL Film [ 2125358 Item 2 ]

If you run into a snag here, economically it better to hire a local
to do the research at the archives as opposed to using the inhouse
archivists. Viktor, one of our members here, nick UNBREAKABLE could
help you w/that. He is a Lviv resident and his prices are very fair.

PS> Both selo/village Koralivka and Skovyatyn still exists today>
Borschivskij (Borschiv) raion/district > Ternopilska (Ternopil)
oblast/region > Ukraine, however I doubt if there are any Poles
left in either place. By 1947 most Poles were in Khazakstan,
Siberia or repatriated back to Poland. Again using Halgal.com
click on to Repatriation and Resettlement of Ethnic Poles
and the explanations are there.

Help with birth record

I have found some birth records for Pankiw in the LDS records. I am attaching some photos of a record I think may be John Pankow's nephew.
There are additional notations made on this record and I am wondering if anyone can help me with what is written. I see the child was illegitimate and am wondering if they are saying that his parents were married later that year?
Any idea as to the notations made on the left hand side of this record? I am hoping someone can help me with this puzzle. Thanks.

They say that someone (supposedly your relative!) applied to the Archives in 1964 and 1982 to receive a copy of certificate.
