Maximovich/Maksymowicz Polish or Ukrainian
Hello, I'm looking for an opinion on this.:
I am trying to figure out if the name Maxemovich, in my family, is Ukrainian or Polish. Long story, but here it goes... My great-grandmother was from Kut-tovsteki (sp?) near Tovste. The spelling of her maiden surname appears several different ways in different records that I have. Ellis Island has Maksimowics, (I think). Her grave says Maxemovich. Her marrage certificate says Maksymowicz. She came to the US in early 1900s. From what my father remembers, she always spoke Ukrainian and very little English. She married a Ukrainian man, and was Orthodox. Her parents are listed as Francis and Pearl (Boiko) Maxemovich, in her obituary. Dispite the Anglicised birth names, they never came to the US. (I later found out "Pearl's" real name was Paraska) I have a copy of a letter that was written by her sister-in-law in Polish. In the letter she is writing to a priest in what I guess was then Poland (Galicia) to to obtain her sister-in-laws baptismal records from a church. The name and location of church is not listed. This priest's name is listed as "Ks. Proboszcza Francizek Rachel." Her parents are written as Francizek Maksymowicz and Parania Bojko. Although she has always assimulated with being Ukrainian, I am asking if there is a possibility her father was actually a Pole, so I know whether or not I have to look through Roman Catholic as well as Greek Catholic records in Kut... Were there Ukrainians with the name Francis/Francezek? Also, does having the surname name "Bojko", mean that her mother's family might have been from Boyko region in the Carpathians? or was this name very common? Thanks for any clues!! MaksKat |

Proboszcz = Pastor
From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Kotowka was hamlet size > the filial GC and RC Churches were in Kopyczynce. Husyatyn was the powiat/adm district and Kopyczynce was the gmina/judicial- tax district > Tarnipolskie wojiwodstwo > Galicia, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the Interwar Period (1919-1938) when this region was a part of Reconstituted Poland, which had not existed for the previous 125 yrs, Kotowka continued to exist w/the filial churches continuing to be located in Kopyczynce. However during this time Kopyczynce was both the powiat and gmina. Post WW2 The Ternipol Region became a part of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain until 1991, when Ukraine became independent. Today selo/village Kotivka still exists > Husyatynskij (Husyatyn) raion/district > Ternopilska (Ternopil) oblast/region> Ukraine, latest zip code 48270. |

Quote:
Boyko or Boiko is the name for a distinctive group of Ukrainian montagnards of the Carpathian highlands. The Boykos inhabit/ed the central and the western half of the Carpathians in Ukraine, Dolyna and a part of Rozhniativ raions (districts) of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (province), Skoliv, Turka, parts of Drohobych, Sambir and Staryi Sambir raions of Lviv Oblast, Volovets and parts of Velykyi Bereznyi and Mizhhirya raions of Zakarpattia Oblast), and the adjacent areas of southeast Poland and northeast Slovakia. Bojko/Boyko is a very common surname. Sure, Grandmother's family may have been from the Carpathian Region, back in the 14th century, when surnames started to come into use. There are no shortcuts. You will have to work backwards and TAKE IT STEP BY STEP. |

Wow! Thank you Hannia for your fast reply and all your information...
but I am afraid that Kotivka might not be the same selo as Kut-Tovstecki? (not sure how to spell it exactly in Ukrainian) I want to make sure that it is. I can't find any information on this hamlet online. I am trying to find Kotivka on a map but can't.The Kut I am looking for was once Kąt Toustecki in Polish. It was in "Tarnopil Skalat Powiat, Touste Gmina". I know where "Kut" was located on a old map of Poland but it is very hard to find any information for it online since I am not exactly sure if the selo still exists or if it is just a part of Tovste, Ukraine now. Here is a mapquest of present day "Tovste" and you can see the triangular piece of land directly underneath it. This is where Kat Toustecki was located. Tovzte I was told that Kat/Kut means corner by a Ukrainian friend. The letter to the priest was written in 1953, but i do not know who was in charge of this area then. I assume Soviets, but why would the letter be written in Polish and not Russian or Ukrainian? This and the fact that my great great grandfather was named Francis is what confuses me about whether he was Polish or Ukrainian.Sorry if this is confusing. i can't help it because I am confused. ha! I appreciate all your time ![]() MaksKat |
