SZUM, Stephen>Kovel, Ukraine
Hello, I am trying to find out any information on this family. My late Father in law Jan Szum was born Jan. 20,1903 Kowel, Russia, which is now Kovel, Ukraine. His parents were Stephen and Natalie Szum. I understand there was a brother who fought in World war II and died in war, name unknown. I would love to find anything out about Stephen and Natalie Szum in Kovel, Ukraine. I would like to know how many kids there were in the family and their names. I am looking for other Szums in Kovel to see if our lines connect. If anyone could help me, I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you.

Was Jan Szum Polish? What religion did he practice?
Was he from Kovel, the district center town, or was he from a village in the Kovel district? Immigrants frequently referred to their district center as place of origin for geographic reference, because their own villages were small. When did he emigrate and where did he settle upon immigration? Last edited by Hannia; 15th January 2008 at 13:33. |

You might consider getting this link translated for yourself.
It describes the final fight selo/village Oblapy in defense of Kovel in 1944. Defenders were Ukrainian Partisans and most were killed, fighting the Nazis. ÊÎÂÅËÜ: ³ñòîð³ÿ òà ñó÷àñí³ñòü - Áèòâà çà Êîâåëü â 1944 ðîö³ As per Ellis Island, there is a Pawel Schum and a Julian Schum heading for Pennsylvania. One immigrated in 1913 and the other in 1914. They were from Oblapy > Vohlyn gubernia. Today selo/village Oblapy has a population of 900. Kovel is the district center > Vohlynska oblast > Ukraine. What I did was bring up as many SZUM variant names and checked to see whether they were from Kovel District. I could only find Julian and Pawel. _______________________________________________ Did Jan/Iwan??? come thru Baltimore? |

Szum, Jan
Hello, wowwwwwwwww thank you very much for the great leads. You sure know your stuff.
Jan Szum came to Canada in 1928, I have his papers, but all it says he was Kowel. He is Ukraine and religion is unknown. He was a wanted man in Kowel, Poland, that is why he left and never contacted his family again, that we know of any ways. He changed his name years later to John Shume, which now we use as our surname. He never spoke much about the family, which is why I am in such a mess, trying to find info when this town and district changed from Russia, to Poland and to Ukraine, I just can't seem to know where to write for what. But with people like you helping I hope I will find out where to write for what. Again thank you for your time and kindness, its very much appreciated. Stephanie stephonah@yahoo.ca |

From late 18th century to 1921 Vohlyn (Vohlynskaya gubernia/region)belonged to the Russian Empire.
From 1921-1939 it (Wohlynskie wojiwodstwo/region) came under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Technically Poland had not existed for the previous125 yrs. In 1941/1942 the Bolsheviks took over and post WW2 Vohlyn became a part of SSR Ukraine, until 1991 when Ukraine became independent. _____________________________________________________ Stephanie, HAVE YOU actually examined the SS Lithuania's ship manifest? Since Iwan thought of himself as politically active, he would have belonged to a local Ukrainian org in Canada??? Where did he settle upon immigration? Most orgs kept donee index cards w/info like place of birth. Please don't take offense, but Iwan was too young to have had a price on his head??? Before 1929 this would have been mostly assigned family legend??? Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists or OUN (Ukrainian: ïÒÇÁΦÚÁÃ¦Ñ õËÒÁ§ÎÓØËÉÈ îÁæÏÎÁ̦ÓÔ¦×, Orhanizatsiya Ukrayins’kykh Natsionalistiv or ïõî) was a Ukrainian political movement originally created in 1929 in the interwar Poland. The OUN accepted violence as a political tool against foreign and domestic enemies of their cause. OUN's stated immediate goal was to protect the Ukrainian population from repression and exploitation by Polish governing authorities; its ultimate goal was an independent and unified Ukrainian state. A later created (1942) military wing of OUN, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), was a major Ukrainian armed resistance movement ____________________________________________________ The key to all your research re Iwan is ascertaining exact place of origin. If you ask Archives to search Kowel City Records, which are quite extensive and they do not find your Immigrant Ancestor, you are wasting everyone's time, including your own. Does Iwan's immigration record indicate an occupation? If he is listed as laborer or farmhand, it is probable he was from one of the many villages in the Kowel district. Was he naturalized? Does he show up in Canadian Census? Steph, there are no shortcuts, especially when you are researching people, emigrating from Vohlynia. PS> So far any Szum that I have been able to unearth is a villager. Most Kovel/Kowel immigrants were Jewish. Last edited by Hannia; 17th January 2008 at 04:06. |

Hi Hannia,
Great to hear from you again. When Jan came to Canada in 1928 he settled in Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba. He had no donee card with him. He was Ukrainian and for sure was from Kovel the city. His citizenship papers say that and the rest of the family confirm that. Till I do more digging I won't know any more till about him. I know nothing much about the family he kept alot of that to himself. That book you suggested I found here in Winnipeg, so I will be going to look at that next week. Jan was not naturalized, and he does not show up on any Canadian census yet. Have to check that when the 1930 census comes out for viewing. Again thank you for are alot of help. Stephanie |
