now, I "heard" these words spoken in my family, but never knew the spelling. This is what they sounded like:

zitzy, zitzy or yazho schmadia

Anyone here know what they mean?
Thanks,
Linda

First of, i think this should have went into language to get better responces. Mods might know better.

Very hard to tell. I have a feeling by "yazho" you mean "yasno" which means definatly. And "schmadia" i dont know but might me "shamnila" which could mean got greedy.

Can you tell us in which situations your family used these words.

Linda,

What nice questions you asked ! No puzzle could be better, indeed. Could you believe just a minute ago I tied to explain what ‘igot ta tolittle….’means. That’s the way some people understood ‘ I’ve got 10 little fingers” in English. Now have to work backwards.

zitzy, - definitely means ‘zvidsy’ – from here. In Ukrainian ‘ú ÷ ¶ ä ó é ’. We use it in phrases ‘Take smth from here to there’ or ‘I can hear /see/smell from here’. In Ukrainian ñ ÂÁÞÕ ÔÅÂÅ ÚצÄÓÉ.

yazho schmadia - ‘yazho’ definitely can be ‘yakscho’ – if. In Ukrainian ñ ë ý ï . The second word ( rather two words as for me) can be ZH and NADA. If we put all together we receive a very colloquial phrase ‘If it is needed’. Remember that colloquial pronunciation differs from written form in our case. In Ukrainian ‘ñËÝÏ Ö ÔÒÅÂÁ ( colloquial nada), ÔÏ ×¦ÚØÍÉ ’ ( If it is really needed , than take it).

That’s my version of your puzzles .Keep investigating !

Serhii, I have to give you a round of applause. That was great.

I am sure about the last word, because that seems a bit off, but everything else makes sence.

Linda, just in case you didn't catch that, zvidsy means "from here"

Great job Serhii

Thumbs up you guys are great

From all my searching I have found one important fact: I am Ukrainian/Hungarian. Dad's side is Ukrainian. My cousin in Ohio sent me many pictures of my aunts and uncles. My mother's side is definitely Hungarian.
I'm in the process of writing my family's story, from the "Old Country to the New".
Linda

Linda, that may also have caused some variance as many languages sound alike
