origin of first name - Bavrick

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the origin of the first name "Bavrick". Is it Polish, Ukranian or is there some other background. Could this name have been spelled differently or was it a spinoff from another name? The name is old and was used in the early to mid 1800's. Thanks,

I have done some extensive research re Bavrick as a given name and have come up w/zero. The only thing I could think of is that it is a German nickman, meaning SMALL FARMER. This is only a guess. I don't have a concrete answer for you.

Something found by accident:

7/6/1899 arriving in New York, there are two Chmilar families emigrating from Bielowec and in transit for Winnepeg.

Andrij (Andrew) Chmilar - age 32
Pataszka/Paraszka Chmilar - age 24, wife (Paraska frequently anglicized to Pearl???)
Nascia (Anastasia) - age 4
Wasyl (anglicized to Bill???) - age 2
Anna - baby

Fedko Chmilar - age 52
Ewa (maybe Eudokia originally) - age 49
Dmytro - 17
Wasyl - 9
Katarzyna - 4

They list an Iwan Kudal/Kudol, friend in Canada.

Hi Cieanne,

I was the last to read your question and write the answer on it , so I simply didn’t know if you were going co came back. Sometimes people didn’t do it – you can find many examples below. But you are here again and that’s wonderful.

A few days ago I ran into very interesting discussion about the origin of the name Barvik. But it is the second name and looks like I spelt it. A huge discussion about such names took place in 19 century ( around 1880 or so). You write that the name you are seeking is a very old one as well. Originally it should be a name of a small town in Poland. Perhaps he was from it ?

As for the first name – it is totally impossible in a form you gave. It could be a denominative form or just nickname. It reminds me beautiful, beloved in Ukraine flower Barvinok ( ever heard ?)
