First written mention of the settlement is made in 1437. In 1456 it became a town and in 1504 it received its Magdenburg trading and artisan rights. The wooden fortress continued to protect the residents against the Varangians, and then later the Turks w/the Tatars destroyed the wooden structure. In the 16th century a stone fortress was built. Then the Polish King Jan III Sobeski enlarged and improved it, later making it into a residential palace. During the Stone Age the first settlers here were Greek seamen and fishermen. Today there are 1500 people still residing in the village. |
