Coal mining in Ohio - history

Coal Mining My grandfather worked at the Webb mine. LOCAL MINING DISASTERS The Benwood Mine (West Virginia) disaster on April 28, 1924 killed 119 men. The Webb Mine in Bellaire, caught fire on Dec. 22, 1925. Nine men were killed. 72 men were killed on March 16, 1940, at the Willow Grove Mine, in Neffs, Ohio. The Powhatan Coal Mine in Powhatan Point, Ohio caught fire on July 5, 1944, and 66 miners died.* Webb Mine Roof Fall-in Aug. 23, 1944 - 2 men killed - William Clifford Little, age 40, of Bellaire, and Jack Fedoski, age 53, of McMechen, WV. |

Thank you for the link. I visited the library you mentioned and I think I’ll send them a thank you letter from Ukraine . Some time ago one lady wrote here about mines in America and now you added more information. For us it is very useful to learn how hard our emigrants worked when they came to America. Seems The Webb mine was a very dangerous one. I appreciate the name Bellaire ![]() Did they have any clean air in such circumstances ?And as for me it’s just wonderful that local libraries collect and display such information . It’s a real history. I wish our ones did the same... |
