Osherenko/Oscherenko/Oserenko ???

As per Ellis island the surname is listed as Hebrew.

TODAY Kozeletz (1990 pop. 9,600) is the district/raion center town in Chernihivska region/oblast > Ukraine
(intl abbr UA) - most current zip code 17000-003.

Kozeletz is a historical place, first mentioned in 1098. It was a fortified town in Kyevan Rus. In 1656 it was
granted the rights of Magdeburg law. It was a company town in the Pereiaslav regiment (1648–67) and the
Kyiv regiment (1667–1782), and from 1708 served as the administrative center of the latter. It then was a
county town in Kyiv vice-regency (1782–97), Little Russia gubernia (1797–1802) and Chernigovska
gubernia/region (1802–1917).

It has a flax-processing plant, a food industry, a mixed-feed industry, and a veterinary medical college. Several
of the town's architectural monuments have been preserved: the baroque Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother
of God, designed by Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli and built by Andrei Kvasov & Ivan Hryhorovych-Barsky in
1752–63, the Regimental building, today town hall designed and built by A. Kvasov and I. Hryhorovych-Barsky in 1756.

Update on Jewish Residents in Kozelets

Anna Proshina, president of the local Jewish community and a retired math and science teacher. Mrs. Proshina
cultivates a large vineyard on her property, producing various wines that are bottled in colorful old vodka bottles.
She also appears to be a local historian, responding in some detail to questions from the writer and Rabbi Saiger
about the history and ongoing renovation of a large and grand 18th–century Orthodox cathedral that appears to
overwhelm the rural character of its surroundings.

Also greeting the Hillel students was Iosif Schuster, regional director of the hesed in Chernihiv. Mr. Schuster said
that the total population of the city of Chernihiv is about 300,000 and the total population of Chernihiv oblast is
about 1.2 million. The Jewish population of Chernihiv city, he said, is about 3,000; another 2,000 Jews live elsewhere
in the oblast, in such towns as Kozelets, Schors, Horodnya, Nezhin, and Priluky. About 150 Jews leave the oblast for
Israel annually, said Mr. Schuster, including many adolescents who enter the Na’aleh high school in Israel program
upon completion of tenth grade. The average salary in the oblast, continued Mr. Schuster, is about $20 monthly,
and the average pension is about $12 monthly. Pensions are usually five to six months late; people are now
(in April 2000) receiving their pensions for November 1999. Medicines, he said, are very expensive, usually beyond
the means of pensioners. He expressed thanks for the medicines (multivitamins and acetaminophen) brought by
Hillel students. The Jews in Chernihiv oblast live relatively well because of the generosity of Jews in the United States,
he added. Mr. Schuster had brought food parcels to be distributed to Jewish elderly in Kozelets; the parcels,
which were temporarily stored in Mrs. Proshina’s sun porch, included various food staples, a carton of fruit juice,
and a copy of the Chernihiv regional Jewish newspaper.

Mrs. Proshina stated that the Jewish community of Kozelets consisted of 16 individuals, 13 women and three men.
Six of the 16 are non-Jews, all married to or widows of Jews. Almost all in the community are pensioners and receive
food parcels. No Jewish young people remain in the town, she said; all leave, most of them going to Israel.

Ten elderly Jews attended the seder. All were seated at a long table, stretching diagonally from one corner of
Mrs. Proshina’s living room/dining room to the other. The Hillel students were at one end of the table and led the
seder, the chief role assigned to a bilingual (Russian-English) International Solomon University graduate now
em-ployed by Hillel. Mrs. Pro-shina and a team of women colleagues had prepared an ample and tasty seder meal.
