Hello Michael.
Leopold is a very rare given name. It is rooted in Old German and means BRAVE PERSON. I have seen the surname spelled Skorobohaty and Skorobahaty. It is the same name, transliterated differently. Skorobohaty means QUICKLY RICH. This surname rings of Cossack heritage??? Cossack surnames had/have a humorous quality to them. In the 17th century the Khmielnicky Cossacks were encamped in this general area of Stanislawow and Tarnipol. After the various battles, some Cossacks settled down in this region. Are you sure that your family was from Ivano-Frankivsk, a large city,or from one of the many villages in one of the districts of the region of Ivano-Frankivsk? Bare in mind that immigrants frequently referred to their regional or district center town as place of origin for geographical reference, because their own villages were small. As per Ellis Island there was a small bunch of Ruthenians/Ukrainians surnamed Skorobohaty, emigrating from Austro-Hungarian Empire during the Great Immigration at the turn of the 20th century. Looks like the ones from Stanislawow Region were emigrating from the village, Stankowce, in the Dolyna District. Stankowce was hamlet size. The filial Greek Catholic Church was in Cerkowna and the filial Roman Catholic Church was in Bolechow. Dolina was the powiat/ administrative district and Bolechow was the gmina/judicial-tax district > Galicia/HALYCZYNA Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Dolyna District is in the foothills of the Carpathian Mtns. Ivano-Frankivska oblast/region is very beautiful. Other Skorobohaty coming thru Ellis Island are shown as emigrating from Tarnipol/Ternopil Region, specifically from places such as Olejiv and Lozova. Does the name Stankowce ring any bells? What religion did Leopold practice? Did he consider himself a Ukrainian or a Pole? Do you have any paperwork of any kind? Many peasants have migrated to the larger towns for economic reasons. Get in touch w/ Ihor, a teacher in Ivano-Frankivsk proper. He has performed some difficult searches successfully. I highly recommend him. igor@micro.il.if.ua Last edited by Hannia; 24th November 2007 at 01:28. |
