Bulgarians in Ukraine and Environs
Dear family and friends,
Zdrave! This email is an open invitation to join a contact list for descendants of Bulgarians from Bessarabia in today's Ukraine. Our ancestors settled Bessarabia in the early 1800's, primarily from eastern Bulgaria. Most of them came to the US and Canada just before WWI and those immigration papers list "Russia" as the country of origin, whereas after the close of the war they list "Romania," the area having been ceded to Romania. Many of these families were from a village now called Suvorovo, but known in the past as Sikirlikitay, Sichirlichitai-Nou, Shikirli-Kitay, and Shekirlikatay, which is what my grandfather called it (coordinates 45œ35' 28œ59'). Other descendants have come from nearby villages and some from the large Bulgarian settlement of Bolgrad near today's Moldova. If there is sufficient interest I would hope to see an Internet site with pictures, recipes, remembrances, recipes, memorials, recipes, reunions, recipes, translations of old letters, family trees and more recipes. Email contact with family in Ukraine would be a most welcomed added benefit. If you are interested, please respond to this invitation. I will send you an information form. We all appreciate Internet privacy, so please know that I have no interest in this information other than putting us in touch with each other and, if there is interest, a nice website. As I mentioned before, this is an open invitation and should you know of others who might be interested, please have them contact me or kindly send me contact information for them and I'll follow-up on that as I can. Do skoro vizhdane! Dimitri Grekoff (family Zhekov) DGGrekoff@aol.com |
