Looking for family in Kharkiv
Hi. I'm looking for my mother-in-law's family in or around Kharkiv. Her family name is Zimovec. Can anyone tell me how or where I can look for information on them. The internet does not have white pages for the Ukraine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Robin

The best way is to ask directly in a special service ( so called Address table ) in Kharkiv. Hope you know that the city and area ( oblast) have huge population and territory. You could ask someone from Kharkiv to do it for you. But , please, always remember that all those services take money for search. A telephone books never contain full and correct information. I could help you but I live 4 hours by car from Kharkiv.

Robin,
I am having a very difficult time locating Mother-in-law's ancestral village. Could Holodhayagara possibly be Rajhorodok/Rajgorodok in Barvinkovinskij (Barvinkove) raion/district? Nearby villages are Karpovka, Donestkoye, Stary Karavan, Golovinevka, Semyonovka, Starodubovka, Nikolayevka, Schurovo. I think HOLOD = Horod. Hay = Raj (pronounced Raay - double a like aye)??? Maybe running thru district centers w/her willl pin things down??? Balaklia Barvinkove Blyznyuky Bohodukhiv Borova Valky Velykij Burlyk Vovchansk Dvorichna Derhach Zachepylivka Zmiyiv Ezyum Kehichivka Kolomak Kracnohrad Kracnokurtsk Kupyansk Lozova Nova Vodolaha Pervomaysk Pechenihy Sakhnovshzyna Kharkivskij (Kharkiv) raion Chuhuyiv Schevchenkove PS> I suspect that Zimovetz is a Cossack name. It means WINTER RESIDENT. I have also come across the surname in Belorus as well??? Last edited by Hannia; 17th September 2007 at 04:47. |

Serhij,
I found a link that covers both the city of Kharkiv and the entire Kharkiv oblast, but it is in Russian and I am having trouble transcribing the surname Zimovec into appropriate Russian, so the search does not accept my request. Please help. Thank you. Last edited by Hannia; 17th September 2007 at 05:55. |

Hannia,
Some notes upon Holodnayagara. It can be Holodnay Gora or Golodnaya Gora in Russian. He gave you correct pronunciation but spelling of it in Russian is different. ( letter O is pronounced as a sound A ). In Ukrainian it is èÏÌÏÄÎÁ çÏÒÁ or çÏÌÏÄÎÁ çÏÒÁ. Perhaps it is a village in Barvinkovskyi region. In Russian the spelling is èïìïäîáñ çïòá or çïìïäîáñ çïòá. |
