Question E-Mail Address

Hannia:

Do you know if is it possible to make research requests to the archive in Lviv via e-mail? If so I would appreciate an address and any advice on how to go about making a request for research into my family tree and possibly land records.

Unfortunately I don't speak Ukranian.

Many thanks

Irv

Welcome Irv,

Records at Historical Achives are 100 yrs old +.

What village/town are you researching? What religion did family practice?
What time frame?

Depending on village/town, there is a fair amt of info available thru LDS.

You can make your inquiry in English, however response will be in Ukrainian.

PS> I would hold off making inquiries for another month. They are dealing
in backlog now and you do not want your inquiry lost in the shuffle.

Hrycak Family

Hello Hannia:

I am researching the Prokip Hrycak family that emigrated to Canada from Galicia in 1899. Their village was Pilatkowce, which I understand is the Austrian/Polish version of the name. I have seen many variations of it as well. This is a small village (pop 1,000 or so) and is about 10 miles north of Borshchiv in Tarnopil district.

I have already collected quite a bit of information from family sources, Hamburg and Halifax passenger lists and Slownik so I know allot about their journey to Canada, the family tree in Canada and I also have a few facts about the village itself.

I am now trying to develop a family tree back as far as is possible with the records available in the old country and thought I would look into what help the State Archives might provide. I am hoping they can provide copies of birth, death, baptism and marriage records and possibly also cadastral records prior to 1988 that might help pinpoint the ancestral home and farmland.

I am presently researching LDS microfilm 2125360, "Tarnopil, Borschiv, Borszczow District, Greek Catholic Church of Pilatkowce Metrical book 1785-1902" but I must confess it is a laborious chore with so much of the text in Latin. Research is further hampered by allot of poor and blurry handwriting in the documents but despite this, I have had some success and will be continuing.

I certainly don't mind paying a reasonable fee to someone who is proficient and responsive in locating these types of records and packaging it all up for me. I really like the "thrill of discovery" in all of this but as a novice in this area and being English speaking only, I am sure to miss allot trying to do it on my own.

Anyway, thanks for your reply and the advice Hannia. Any further insights would be greatly appreciated.

Irv,

Get in touch w/Vitalij. His friend, Ihor, has written a book re families in
Borschiv District. He is a Lviv & Ternopil resident, who is very familiar
w/Historical Archives in Lviv and the Ternopilska Oblast Archives & Borschiv
RAHS (District Archives). He comes w/exc refs and rates are very fair.
If you like, he can also visit your ancestral village, take pictures and check
for any surviving relatives still residing in the vllage. vivandr@brandeis.edu

I am using official names of places for specific time frame.

From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Pilatkowce was
predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own GC
Church. The filial RC Church was in Jezierzany. Borszczow
was both the powiat (administrative district) and gmina
(judicial-tax district) > Tarnopolskie Wojiwodstwo/region >
Galicia Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the Interwar Yrs (1919-1939)
this region came under Reconstituted Poland's domain.
Technically Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity
for the previous 125 yrs. All previous names are Polish.
Post WW2 Pilatkovtse > Ternopolska oblast became a part
of SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain. In 1991 Ukraine became independent.

Today your selo/village Pylatkivtsi (transliterated from Ukrainian) still exists >
Borschivskij raion/ district > Ternopilska oblast/region > Ukraine, latest zip 48713

PS> Today Jezierzany is called Ozeryany.

Irv, you strike me as very thorough, so you may very well have already
been on this site and read thru this material, but if you haven't, you
will find some help w/Latin there.
