Hi,
I'm researching my family history. My Ukrainian relatives came to the U.S.(Ellis Island) in 1922. According to the Ellis Island documents, my relatives came from Tuzeczki, Poland. Does anyone know the history of this city? Has the name changed since 1922? I have not been able to find any world maps with this information. The family surname was "Bogil". Any help would be appreciated! Regards, Tom Bogil |

Greetings Tom,
I suspect your ancestral Tuzeczki, Poland was actually 1922 selo/village TURECZKI > Turka District > Lwowskie Wojiwodstwo/region > Reconstituted Poland (1919-1939), which had not existed for the previous 125 yrs. From late 18th century to 1919 this region was called Eastern Galicia/HALYCZYNA (in Ukr) > administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Post WW2 it became a part of the SSR Ukraine, under Soviet domain. In 1991, Ukraine became independent. It celebrated it's 16th Anniversary, week before last. Today above is Western Ukraine, very close to current Polish border. http://www.mapquest.com/maps/print.a...5aEjO09Mzjb5Nx I will be more than happy to help you research your roots, but it will have to wait until Monday. Then I will confirm my suspicion and we will go from there. PS> What is given name of Mr. Bogil? Where did he settle upon immigration? Greetings Hannia,
Thank you so much for the invaluable feedback. The history of this region is so complex. Growing up, my Aunt recalled how her family came here from Galicia, which was close to Kiev. Fortunately, I was able to find several documents that listed Tuzeczki as the town they were from. Jan (John) Bogil and his family came to Ellis Island, New York, (1922) and settled in Carteret, New Jersey. They came on the SS America, which departed from Bremen (I assume this is Germany) to the United States. His wife's name was Katarzyna (Katherine), daughters, Maria (Mary), and Zofia (Sophia) and a son, Wasyl (Charlie). He had a brother in the Ukraine, named Petro (Peter) and their father's name was Timko (Tim or Tom?). Jan Bogil was 40 Years old when he arrived in the United States. His wife, Katarzyna Onaczyszyn(maiden name) was 36 years old. They were buried in a Ukrainian Catholic cemetary in Perth Amboy New Jersey. I hope this information is not verbose and is of some help. Regards, Tom Bogil

We forget that California, Texas and Louisiana once belonged to Mexico.
As a matter of fact Louisiana went thru a variety of rulers. Ukraine is not all that different. "Did Your Baba Come from Austria?" by Orysia Tracz ______________________________________________________________ Today selo Nizhnij-Turiv (Ukr name) still exists > Turkivskij raion/district > Lvivska oblast/region > Ukraine (abbr UA), latest zip code is 82533. Maybe the ship manifest will provide us w/more info??? Last edited by Hannia; 2nd September 2007 at 18:15. |

As per Lenius' "Galician Gazatteer", Tureczki Nizne (today Nizhnij/Lower Turiv) was
predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek Catholic Church. The filial Roman Catholic church was in Turka. Turka was the powiat (administrative district) and Borynia was the gmina (judicial-tax district). Tureczki Wyzne (today Verhnij/UpperTuriv) was hamlet size. It shared the GC Church in Tureczki Nizne. The filial RC Church was in Turka. Turka was the powiat and Borynia was the gmina. The Turka District is nestled in the foothills of the Carpathian Mtns. Your ancestral village was founded in 1556. Decree was given by Hungarian Queen Jablonka Isabelle. And Tureczki Wyzne was called Tureczki Korolis then. It was actually a country royal residence. There is a Christian Orthodox Church in that hamlet. It was built in 18th century. This is the GC Church your ancestors attended. This is Boyko architecture. Boyko were/are a micro-ethnic Ruthenian/Ukrainian group. Bieszczady - Galeria - Cerkiew w m. Tureczki Ni¿ne - Nadsiañski P.K. - fot. © ECBC/A. Szczerbicki I haven't had any luck locating LDS films for your ancestral village. Will continue looking. Last edited by Hannia; 2nd September 2007 at 18:07. |

Geneology-Tuzeczki, Poland
Greetings Hannia,
Funny, but I just noticed on my grandfather's death certificate that his place of birth was Austria, 1882, Turka region? I'm not sure who Theodore is, but I do know that my grandfather came to the US. in 1909 and stayed for two years, and then returned to Poland in 1911. He came back in 1922 with his family. The ship manifest/immigration papers indicate that he had been here in 1909. Looks like there is a 100Kb limit on uploads, so I'll to see if I can put these documents on a website and forward a url link. Thanks for time and your patience! Regards, Tom Bogil |
