Tracing Ukraine family - Feday

Hello,

Don't know where to start so here we go. Around WWII a ukrainian immigrant came across and lived with my family untill present day. Don't think he has ever looked for his family although, i belive a few years back some came to our house from his area. Wanted to know what people would recommend in trying to trace some roots back to the ukraine and what info would be available if any ???

His surname is Feday, lives in the Rhondda Valleys as this was a mjor factor due to the caol industry at the time. He is currently 84 and came across when he was approxamatly 20.

Any info would be very useful.

Thanks

I did some browsing re Feday / Fedaj / Федай (in Ukrainian). At the turn of the
century the surname shows up mainly along what is Ukraine - Poland border today.

Today the surname can be found all over Ukraine, both West and East. Additionally
one can also find this surname in Northern Poland, where Ukrainians, residing within Poland post WW2, were resettled.

Do you have any idea where Mr. Feday (A sound pronounced like AH) was born.
Did he ever talk about his village/town? How did he land up in Wales?

???
Lviv White Pages has 3 Fedaj families living in the city. Many villagers have migrated to cities for
economic reasons.

???
I suspect Mr. Feday's ancestral origins may have been Tartar??? They settled in
Halyczyna (Western Ukraine) in appx 16th century and mixed w/the Eastern Slavs living there. According
to my Mom, whose heritage was also Tatar, very few Tatar/Ukrainian families emigrated at turn of century,
because they owned a fair amt of property. There are a handful of Fedaj's in British Columbia, Canada and
in Chicago, USA.
