Thanks, V-G.

I got ìÏÎÉÁË from an online Russian translator. I can't seem to find a good Ukrainian translator. Is there much difference?

The first letter is L ( with a dash - I can not print it), isn't it ? In Polish this letter snads for a sound close to Ukrainian W. If we read the name appropriately to spelling you wrote then we have very bad word ( = bad smelling or so). I don't think the surname Woniak ( ÷ ï î ñ ë in Ukrainian ) is possible at all.

The only possible letter in the beginning is L. But then we have another unusual name ì ï î ñ ë ( this one is possible). The most typical similar name is Luniak ( ì õ î ñ ë ). Such surnames can be met. Interestenly that in order to receive it you only have to shift a dash from letter L to next one O ( Lo'niak). Then all word shoulb be read as Luniak.

You can meet surname ÷ ï ú î ñ ë.

And I do not think any online translator can translate surnames appropriately - just impossible as you couls see.

Hi Serhii,

Yes, the first letter is L with a dash. I think this is the Polish spelling for the name. In the USA, it is Loniak.

Since I'm writing the archive to hopefully obtain my grandfather's military record (served in the Austrian-Hungarian Army 1902-1917), perhaps the surname & that of his mother's maiden name (Say) shouldn't be translated? I'll let you decide when you translate the letter.

Hope you got my email address from the other post.

Have a great weekend.

Joyce
