My grandfather's name was Howrilo Bodnarek,from Stawchan. came to Canada around 1900. Wife's name was Katerena (nee Gnyp)

Howrilo/closer transliteration is HAWRYLO Bodnarek. Given name is rooted in Greek and means GOD'S STRENGTH. My guess is that Bodnarek is actually Bodnaruk in Ukr.

I have spent some time trying to locate Stawchan. I suspect you are looking for what is STAVCHANY today. I found two villages w/same name, one in Lvivska Region and the other in Kitsman District > Chernivetska (Chernivtsi) Region, frequently referred to as Bukovina.
