Kathy,
Irene is correct. KOVAL/KOWAL actually means SMITH in Ukrainian. What you will need to do is locate your Immigrant/Ancestors' immigration records and those are in the USA. Once you have ascertained their exact place of origin, only then can you bridge the Atlantic and proceed to research the family in Ukraine. I cannot emphasize enough how critical it is to ascertain EXACT PLACE OF ORIGIN, especially since your surname is such a very common name in Ukraine. _________________________________________________________ What were your Grandparents' full names and where did they settle upon immigration? Did you know your Grandparents? Is there family history that might help us ascertain their origins in Ukraine? Did Grandparents marry in what is Ukraine today? Do you know Grandmother's maiden name? That would enable you to work w/two surnames, making it a little easier. The task is not as daunting as you might think, but we will have to take it step by step. |

Yes, most of the transcribed books are in Russian (for now), but information is from all parts of Russian Empire (including Ukraine, Baltic states, Central Asia, etc). I would even argue that this information is useful to people of European origins - German, French, Serbian, etc - many of whom immigrated to or out of what is now Ukraine.
