I am looking to see if I have any relatives left in Odessa or Kiev.
Our last name is Zakow but it was Kosakovsky or Kozakovsky. My grandfather was born here, but went back to Odessa in the early 1900's. He was separated from his family and drafted into the army, and fought in the revolution before making his way out of the country. Supposedly, he was sent to destroy a printing press back in Odessa and kill the shop keeper, but the shopkeeper recognized him because he knew our family. He helped my grandfather out of Russia. This is a true story as far as I know it. If anyone has any information, please email it on to me at LZakow@aol.com. Thank you. |

zakow family in Canada
I just wanted to say I stumbled upon your entry here. My mother's family is Zakow from Windsor, Ontario and I've always wondered about their origins. Wonder if you have info that connects our families.

I am not aware that we have any relatives in Canada. As far as I know, there is only us, and our name was changed at Ellis Island from either Kosakov or Kosakovski.
Here's some information that may help: My Grandfather's name was Samuel. He was born here but emigrated back to Russia at age 4. He fought supposedly on both sides of the Russian revolution before an owner of a print shop helped him escape to England. He was sent to destroy the print shop. He left England and settled here and married a woman named Bella, who came here from Poland which has been part of the Ukraine from time to time. We're a small clan, but there is myself, Lee, my brother, Andrew, my Uncle (Harold, my dad's name was Gilbert), Harold's kids (Douglas, Sharon and Renee), second cousin Joel. He has two kids: Peter and Stephanie. Could you please tell me more about the Windsor people? I did a search and only found Zakowski. Lee Zakow |
