Vitayu all - I am new to this site. Wondering if anyone out there knows and can share info about a Kucyk family (my mother, Stephania Kucyk, was born in 1910 in then Austria, village of Pobereze (Poberezzia in Tysmennyzia
district of Ivano Frankivsk region now), in Galicia region. Her mother was Rosalia (maiden name Kamitski, or something like that) and her father was Antoni Kucyk. Antoni immigrated to USA in 1910 at age 32, and Rosalia and their two daughters, Stephania and Maria, followed to USA in 1914 to Ellis Island, New York. My mother and her siblings have since died, and all I have is the orally-passed down family history. My brother and I would love to gain more knowledge about our ancestry, and I would be grateful to share any Ukrainian family history with my 8 year old son. I recently met a wonderful Ukrainian couple here in the USA who are helping me with a geneology connection in the Ukraine, but thought posting this might be helpful, too. Appreciate any clues to my past that you may have! dyakuyu! Sue |

As per Ellis Island Original Ship Manifest, Rozalia Kucyk (born 1878, same as husband) listed leaving her sister H. Tymczyshyn behind in village of origin??? She and her children were heading for her husband's on East Houston Street in New York City.
From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Pobereze was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek Catholic Church. The filial Roman Catholic Church was in Jezupol. Stanislawow (I think became Ivano-Frankivsk post 1964) was both the administrative district and the judicial/tax district > Galicia Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Technically Antoni and Rozalia and children were Ruthenians emigrating from Austria. 1919-1938 this area came under Reconstituted Poland's domain. Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs. Post WW2 the region was part of SSR Ukraine (Soviet rule) until 1991, when it became independent. All names in previous paragraph are Polish. TODAY selo/village Poberezhya still exists > Tysmenytskij (Tysmenytsya) raion/district > Ivano-Frankivska Oblast > Ukraine, latest zip code 77430. This general area of Western Ukraine is frequently referred to as Halyczyna. According to one source I checked, LDS has not filmed the church registers from villages in Tysmenytskij raion. You will need to contact Ivano Frankivska Oblast Archives. Pobereze - - - - - - - -- 4, 1969-1974, 1976-1979 Check w/Mark Dusyk in Canada. He is the most knowledgeable as to what has been filmed and can tell you if this is indeed your Pobereze > Stanislawow / Ivano-Frankivska Oblast. mgdusyk@telus.net If above has been copied, you can easily order the film yourself and do your own research here in States. Check following link to locate nearest/convenient research center. If you're in NYC there is one across the street from Lincoln Center. Thank you, Hannia!
You are incredible, Hannia. Thank you so very much for that (quick) information! I live in Maine now, so researching this via internet is very useful. I'm so glad I discovered this site. Thanks again for helping me. I have a lot to learn...am curious how Ruthenian and Ukrainian differ? Gratefully, Sue

Sue, for your purposes, Ruthenian is just the offical Austro-Hungarian Empire name for the ethnic Ukrainian in Galicia
and Podolia. Most other explanations are exercises in intellectual futility and depend on the individual defining the difference. ___________________________________________________ I have recently come across a contraction re powiat in 1900. According to source other than Lenius' Gazetteer, 1900 Tysmenytsia was actualy in Tłumacz district. This should not affect your LDS search. ________________________________________________________ You may very well enjoy this read.
