If I said "peh-deh-heh," would anyone have any idea what food I was refering to? My grandparents used this word instead of pyrohy/vareniki. My Great-grandparents were from western Ukraine...

This is too eerie!

I was just looking for the proper spelling to "peh-deh-heh" and came across this forum. Low and behold, you've just posted about the same such thing! Very eerie!

My Nana, Baba and Tata also called them "peh-deh-ha". In my instance, Baba and Tata are my great grandparents. My Great-Grandmother was known so well as Baba that we couldn't use the nickname for my Grandmother.

My Tata was from Chortkow..which was then Austria. And my Tata was from Ozereny.

CCRyder,
Wow, that is a unique coincidence! I was beginning to think my family made up the word, but really I've always thought it was more likey a regional variation. Are your ancestral villages in the Ternopil' Oblast? I don't hear other people of Ukrainian background here in the U.S. saying it. Did you ever find other references on the web about Pedeheh??

Thanks ricardo, that's what I was looking for!

It's nice to meet you Greg M. I'm not sure where my ancestry lays. My Nana doesn't talk much about it, and my Baba and Tata have both passed away..living until their late 90's I might add.

I'm a little confused, what I did find out was their villages were once considered Austria, I'm even more confused about why we consider ourselves Ukrainian instead of Austrian. I don't know where to start finding out information about how everything came about.

I haven't found any references online or in real life to the way we say peduha.

I'd love to hear more and learn more about where peduha came from and why we are a small percentage that use it. Are you up for it?

Hannia is on a distinguished road
CCRyder,

The town and village you mentioned are in the Ternopilska Oblast/Region of Ukraine.

At the turn of the century the Ternopil Region was a part of Halychyna>Eastern Galicia. From the late 18th century to 1919 this was the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Then from 1919-1939 it came under Polish dominance. Then post WW2 until 1991 under Soviet domain.

Thank you many times over, Hannia. This is more than I could have hoped for. This is so priceless, I'm in awe of finding answers to a heritage long unavailable. I honestly did not know where to begin, and only last year persevered enough to learn the cities where my Baba and Tata were born and raised.

I definitley never percieved that by looking for the spelling to the peduha so loved by my family would bring me so much more.

Would this topic now be best suited for the ancestral board, or history? After reading and letting all the infomation put before me seep in, I will most definitely love to learn more. I have much studying to do!

Greg-M, Hannia has answered your question for me. At the risk of sounding ignorant in my excitement and before moving on to read the links Hannia has given me..which will most likely answer my question... Is Western Ukraine and the Ternopilska Oblast one and the same? I'm going to find the answer immediately following posting my reply, but am still eager to hear back from you.

Of course, I'm still going to keep and eye on this thread for more members who know what peduha are.
