Batu said something interesting about Dr Kvashnievski's diet.
You surely know that the famous diet pyramid has been redesigned lately and now refined rice and white bread are as bad as candies! Poor Chinese, I can already hear their moaning ...lol.
One of my daugthers was so serious about Kwashniewski's "theories" that some three years ago she declared: no potatoes and no bread on my plate! Instead, she demanded double portion of steak. I was totally desperate.>>>>

Ok Zbyszek ,so you know something about dr Kwasniewski after all.Well how is that in Polish Salo ,szmalec i think

.Someone has to deffend that Salo/szmalec ,

it is a good food after all,but please do not eat the way these Navy guys did, that is too much 1/2 kg .
If you eat little of any fat stuff, you eat very little ,you fill full and you not running back and for to the fridge as some people do ,Animal fat goes thrue our system very easy down the exit pipe.Fat does not makes us fat, only if eaten with lot of Carbs.(weglowodany) ,
Carbs make us fat ,all sweat stuff ,plus most of agriculture growing stuff ,like grains, petatoes ,rice etc ,bread and pasta ,lot of carbs there .Best food by dr Kwasniewski it is yoke of the egg ,that little yellow stuff.I eat at least 5 to 6 a day if I can ,

Anyway if you guys want to know more about his Optimal Diet here are 2 links in English ,and for those who know polish there are lot of links to chose ,just put on search dieta optymalna or dr Kwasniewski and all shaws up.

That is more then I thought ,anyway stop eat junk food ,say sorry to salo and change your way of eating and you might live long and healty life,.
When Grandpa Batu says so ,you better belive it (.(..

Greetings Zbyszek and Vanya! I have been reading the boards but have not had time to post anything of interest on the history board, but I read Vanya's excellent salo post.

"Stryko" is used in Western Ukraine (and in Novgorod!), "vyuko" too. "Sikorka" is the same in Ukrainian - chickadee. They LOVE salo, and butter.

Hello Batukhan - you misread my post. It was only Sasha who ate a half kilo. My husband, at 182 cm, was 60 kg (now in "old age" up to 70 kg) as were the other sailors - near impossible for those boys to eat a half kilo of salo in one sitting!

Vanya and Zbyszek, I must advise that salo addicts in Ukraine initially were disappointed last month. Two trucks in Lvivska oblast', loaded with 17 tonnes of salo, were stopped by sharp smelling border guards. Polish entrepreneurs, knowing of Ukrainians' insatiable desire for salo, attempted to smuggle the load in, claiming the trucks were loaded with furniture. The good news is, the salo was confiscated and likely made its way to markets throughout Western Ukraine.

Greetings Katya, Vanya and Batu,
Kathy, let me regard the smuggled and confiscated Polish salo as a good Polish promotion and a sign of budding Polish-Ukrainian trade links. Vanya, while eating it (or giving it to sikorkas) think about the slaughtered pigs and cry over their plight for a moment ...LOL. Vanya, do you still remember my story about a hog and a butcher in Politics forum?
Na Zdrovye! ...and Polish Wodka Wyborowa will be a good combination with Polish salo!
Batu, I always appreciate your share to our talk which comes somewhat unbridled from time to time. Thank you for your diet links. I will pass them over to my daughter. Pozdrawiam z Lechistanu dziadka Tatara i jego male wnucze!
Do you know the following?

Jak Tatarska Orda
Bierzesz w jasyr corda.

[and your grandkid surely took your heart into sweet captivity]

"Tatar" meat

Serve with a piece of bread, pickled cucumbers and a shot of vodka!
Do you know it, Batu?
I wonder why it is called 'tatar'. Would it be a trace of some ancient recipe?

P.S
I shouldn't have posted this on history forum, but then again - 'tatar' is worth historical annals in my opinion.. [/b]

Hello Halinko,
I moved your question from History board and I am placing it here. I think 'tatar' meat name was adopted because 1. we eat it as raw meat, I know that Tartars were masters in drying raw meat 2. It was originally prepared of horse meat. I loved this kind of meat but now I am just afraid of it because it is made of beef and there is so much noise about the mad cow disease, not to say about meat parasites. Many years ago it was served with the uncooked egg's yolk. Now, it is regarded as potentially dangerous.
Salo is a Ukrainian equivalent of the Polish "sadlo" but this word is rarely used now. Slonina is hard and processed (salted; salty=slony in PL) fat.

Re:

Hi,

in Belgium they have the same dish it is not called 'tatar' but it is called américan préparé.
they are eating it also spread on a piece of bread or on a sandwich or with salad - it is usely used in cold dishes.
So I think you can find it in more countries but under other names because here in belgium no tatars invated the country if I recall its history.

Thanks you Grandpa Batu,

I KNEW salo had to be good for you (in moderation, of course). A little salo, a little black bread, a little vodka, a little love from your family, everybody feels OK.

I know this for a fact, that usually when there's salo on the table there's also fish, usually some nice herring or even shproty or sardines, it doesn't matter. It has that oil in it that's good for you, and I'll bet it makes up for the other stuff. I don't think I've ever seen a table with salo that didn't have some fish on it.

50 million Ukies can't be wrong.

OH MY GOD!

You folks not only still eat that, but LOVE it!?!?!

Oh boy, I liked it, but man, in the U.S. even Ukrainian men eat greens and protein drinks, not salo!

But we still like SEX better than our greens!
