It's a fact of life that someone should and would arbitrage when there is a shortfall somewhere and true to say that language is a powerful incentive and mass communication.
On the other hand I am Spanish speaker so would that mean that every single Spanish speaking identity should unite because of this common bond? Doubt that very much. Proximity adds but not necessarily unite nations one is econmics the other is politics and the other factor are culture and religion.
In principle I do not object to an union but rather the terms and conditions of this union, much like Western Europe economic union is based (arguably and questionably)on fair concepts and not just a convenient political union based on language, religion and ethnicity and in last place the factors of production.
Russia is big and it can turn out to be a white elephant, it has enourmous logistic problems let alone a large and strong black economy. It would be suicide to join Russia today. On the other I did not state the readiness of Ukraine to join EU but my statement refers to a future date and I've even threw an hypothetical Back Sea Economic Community into the equation which of course does not exist.
