HIV is still generally transmitted through sexual promiscuity and drug addiction (sharing needles). These are things that people choose to partake in, so it stands to reason that the vast majority of AIDS sufferers have brought it upon themselves. It is of course a tragedy when someone receives a blood transfusion with contaminated blood, or a hospital assistant gets pricked by a used needle (I have a friend that went through a scare like this), or perhaps someone becomes the unfortunate victim of a crime where the virus is passed on to them. These people I have the deepest sympathy for and I exclude them from the others as they did not choose their fate.
The latest statistics show that in the 1st world countries there is a distressing trend towards unsafe, high-risk practices among the youth especially. People seem to have lost their fear for the disease and it will soon tell. These people cannot claim to be uneducated as to the risks involved. Even in the poorer, uneducated communities, this is not really an excuse. If you keep it where it belongs, then you cut down the risks.
