In view of differing reports, an opinion would be just that - an opinion, with an inevitable personal bias. More appropriately, one should address the merits of the diverse reports based on factual evidence. Since the latter is still to be ascertained, premature opinions could only foment rash reactions.
If proper authorities, close to the incident, fail to create an atmosphere conducive to getting at the truth, then higher governmental agencies, on both sides, should get involved. Per the press reports, it appears, that is where the case rests now. emkay/02/01/01 [Edited by NORRYM on 2nd February 2001 at 20:56] |

Sad story...
I heard that he was shot because of speeding. Is it true? It doesn't make any sence to me. I think that there must have been something else going on. I remember hearing about an accident similar to this in a bad part of NY (if I'm not mistaken). Where policemen shot a men who had apparently bad English (as we figured it out later.) They asked him something that he could not understand, then he was trying to get his wallet out. A policeman in his turn thought that the man wanted to get a weapon out of his pocket. (Probably it happens once in a while) and shot him! A man died... So, I do not know what was going on there with a polish officer. Could it be an accident? The fact of the presence of the pregnant wife makes things look more dramatic. God forbid this happen to anyone! But are we looking only at one side of the story so far? Can anyone be more specific about what happened? I really do not have much access to the Ukrainian press... |

Scouring today's Ukraine press, only KYIV POST was found to report on the case. In its AP dispatch of February 1, 2001, the KP informs of three developments: {1} Kwasniewski sent condolences to Kuchma {2} Conflicting reports from the scene still persist {3} Ukraine Foreign Ministry {UFM} is sending a special team to Poland, for close range investigation. The latter will also include the inspection of Poland prisons where Ukraine citizens are being held.
Two details, not bearing directly on the imputed fault, came to light. The 25 year old victim is still identified only by his first name, Serhiy. The incident occured near Chelm, distanced 200km NE of Warsaw. emkay/02/02/01 [Edited by NORRYM on 2nd February 2001 at 22:26] |
