Unity day- 22 January
About 10,000 people created a live chain connecting the Bandera and Shevchenko Monuments in Lviv
They carried a 10 m long Ukrainian flag to the Shevhenko Monument where a rally was held to commemorate the 92th anniversary of the UNR and ZUNR unification. ![]() ![]() More photos from Lviv: Від Бандери до Шевченка простягся «живий ланцюг» для Януковича In Kyiv, 2 rallies were held - pro-Presidential in the Indpendence Square, and that organised by the opposition in the Sofiyska Square. While speaking to a rally in the Sofiyska Square in Kyiv, Tymoshenko asked the people whether they are ready to unite to improve their lives, and they, in turn, said: 'Ready!' 'We are starting to work hard to unite our nation and improve our lives,' Tymoshenko said. The declaration of unity between the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR) and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic (ZUNR) was proclaimed in Sofiyska Square in Kyiv on 22 January, 1919. The ZUNR became part of the UNR on the basis of the Declaration. However, due to a difficult international and domestic situation, the unification of Ukrainian lands was not then brought to life, and their authorities continued to function independently. Ukrainian Unity Day was established in 1999 by a Presidential Decree to emphasize the political and historical significance of the unification of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic in 1919 into a single independent Ukrainian State.
