SVOBODA paper carries reprints from Ukraine papers, only they are two weeks behind. Local Ukrainian, 1hr per week, radio program parrots Kuchma line, and confuses it with some other version - in the end, blames Moscow or the West for everything. As one can see, the situation is pitiful.
Papers here would not print anything close to what I openly discuss on this forum - they would not even answer me why? I know why - because they are afraid not to oblidge the official, ingrained diaspora propaganda machine. The bigger problem is, that the majority believes and follows blindly what they are being told. The tired, confused majority is brainwashed by the few activists, who feed them the bush-league propaganda or half-truths. In the end, this state of affairs resembles the years under Stalin - only in the privacy of their homes, anyone dares to open up and say what they really think. Even that rarely happens anymore, for they {the majority} became afflicted with the 'Simpson decease' - believing already, whatever lies they parrot in the open. emkay/03/01/01 [Edited by NORRYM on 1st March 2001 at 21:25] |

I ain't agreeing to toe the line with any Diaspora way of thinking, but as this was a letter in the FT, a british news paper, I made the assumption that people would be interested in what Kuchma was saying to the British. Evidently this some-what unusauly event wasn't worthy of mention in the Kuchmagate topic.
http://www.ft.com Check it out for articles that this member of the diaspora reads. Vlas I made the mistake of thinking that printing an article didn't have to imply that i agreed with it, even if I didn't add any comment. |

My post did not ALLUDE to SV at all. The FT is not a Ukrainian paper anyway. Personally, I hold the FT in high regard, as a source. The article, SV posted, held my attention riveted to the board/thread. My impressions, simply relate to the general situation within a typical Ukrainian ghetto in the US. The impressions were meant to be in response to some questions, raised in preceding posts, by LippyChick and Irena.

I've put my rattle back in my pram.
![]() You may be interested to know my local Ukie club was to a person getting drunk last Friday to celebrate the resignation of Kuchma, they were gutted when I told them he was still in power. The British Diaspora is quite different to the Canadian. There are very few Black & Reds. Take care, Steve. |

I'm a litle bit nervous about 'poking my nose'in on this site. I'm certain to have it bitten off. However . . . .
This is YOUR chance to educate me. Kiev is (suddenly) a "tent free zone". I want to know why the Ukrainian people didn't send Kuchma 'north' months ago? I'm sure mr Putin has the guest room already prepared. Why is it that you have a criminal President bleeding the country white and the people just stand around and 'watch'? We British are nothing special, but I KNOW that if our Government behaved similar to that of Kuchma there would be (literally) millions of people on the streets. The few Ukrainians I know are all saying: "Oh. Politics is boring. Our politicians are all corrupt. What can we do?" My feeling is, that kind of 'fatalism' will continue to hold Ukraine back. S.B. A third, in a row, independent agency in the West, to analyze the Melnichenko tapes, has announsed a no verict decision today on the authenticity of the tapes. This is considered a major blow to the opposition. Kuchma was emboldened, to the point, that he had militia take down the protester's tent city. This event {the no verdict} has the effect of applying brakes hard on the acceleating protest tempo. Another wait and see phase is taking hold, until something new develops. It should be noted, that the prior two technical agencies, Duch and German, had produced more affirmative results on the tapes credibility. It was the today's decision that the West was looking for to give a green light for applying full pressure to Kuchma. Now the pressure is on hold.
