Eastern Ukrainians tend to speak russian and Western ukrainians tend to speak Ukrainian.
Please anyone post your thought on the issue.

I found it interesting to travel to Kyiv from about 95 to 01, one could feel the change in language. I remember my mom and I would always get chicken from this place on Khreschatyk and the ladies there would speak Russian only the first time and then 1/2 Russian 1/2 Ukrainian. My last visit they all spoke Ukrainian by default. I found that very interesting to observe, it seemed like Ukraine was really becoming independent by reclaiming the language in the capital.
Unfortunately I did not enjoy the language spoken in villages around L'viv, too much Polish slang. Yet they were all convinced they spoke the one and only true Ukrainian... funny. |

Lemko,
East can stay that way it is, they need to do business with the neighbor etc. The majority of the population is actually Russian (or at least 1/2 Russian)... but the capital has to speak Ukrainian, otherwise it is embarrassing, or at least should be. Last time I was in Kyiv was 2001, I hope that by now you hear Ukrainian on the streets and in the shops as a norm and not as an exception (as was the case back in the early 90s). Where did you hear German/Ukrainian? That would have been funny! I speak some German, not fluent but enough to get by... |
