I just came back from Ukraine. I spent time with my family there. We drove out to the villages and it was getting dark on the way back to L'viv. Upon entering the outer city limits, a policeman standing in the intersection waved at us with a flashlight to pull over. My cousin in the car told my husband and I ( Americans) to be quiet. The policeman demanded a bribe to let us pass. My cousin used to be a policeman and was injured in the line of duty. He cannot work in this profession anymore and does not want to as the higher ups EXPECT him to be corrupt. He carries papers with him stating that he used to be a policeman. He got out of the car and showed this guy the papers. We were allowed to pass. We asked what would have happened if he had not had these papers. He told us that the cop would search the car and find something to arrest us for and we would go to jail. He did not want him to know there were Americans in the car as that could have caused more trouble. He told us that this kind of thing goes on ALL the time. He carries the papers with him everywhere. Even the families in the small villages are subjected to this stuff. They have to pay a "cow tax" on each cow they own...about $300 US a year. The money goes to some local dude who puts it in his pocket. If they don't pay the cow is taken away. The folks in the villages are afraid if they don't pay they will be sent to Siberia. THIS IS TRUE! they told me this themselves. We just could not believe we were hearing this stuff and that these wonderful people are having to live like this.

Well a lot of cops take bribes, like at the border, where you have to wait for hours or pay $20.

Im still a minor, so i cant do anything about this, but when i will be an adult, i will record this and let everyone know. Im sure the channels wont mind, and get all them arrested.
