They were fighting for independent Ukraine
A memorial plaque to Brotherhood of Taras members was unveiled in Sumy Oblast
Alla Akimenko 24 September, 2014 - DENN Kyiv UA

An unveiling ceremony of the memorial plaque to Brotherhood of Taras took place in the village Hlynsk, Sumy oblast; the establishment of the plaque was initiated by the Center of National Revival.

It was in Hlynsk in summer of 1891 that the ground of the unique document, the Program which for the first time set the political goal of obtaining independence of Ukraine, was laid. The participants of the Brotherhood of Taras, a secret student organization, took a vow on the grave of Taras Shevchenko “to do what it takes to popularize the immortal ideas of Great Kobzar among the Ukrainians,” and the most important idea is about free Ukraine.

The founders of the Brotherhood of Taras included Vitalii Borovyk, Borys Hrinchenko, Ivan Lypa, Mykola Mikhnovsky, Volodymyr Shemet. Besides cultural activity (spreading of Ukrainian language in their families, in institutions and schools, teaching Ukrainian reading and writing to children, lectures, and cultivation of Shevchenko’s ideas), the Brotherhood of Taras brought forward the political postulates of freeing the Ukrainian nation from under the Russian domination, get full autonomy for all the nations of the Russian Empire and social justice.

The main theses included independent sovereign Ukraine: united and integral, “from Sian to Kuban, from the Carpathians to the Caucasus, free among the free, equal among the equal, without a master or aggressor, and without class struggle in the future.” Viktor Roh, a public figure, editor-in-chief of the semi-official organ of OUN “Way of Victory,” who put direct efforts to commemorate the Taras Brotherhood Members, reminded the guests of this. To the sounds of the state anthem the national flag was removed from the memorable plaque. A Hlynsk schoolgirl and Viktor Roh had the honor to solemnly unveil the plaque. Since now on this will be a sign of honor for those who devoted their lives to Ukraine. It reminds us, the contemporaries, that we have no right to betray the ideals of Ukrainian statehood.

Ukrainian events ‘Belarusianizing’ Belarus, Kyiv commentator says
014/10/21 • Paul A. Goble EUROMAIDAN PRESS

As a result of events in Ukraine, a Kyiv commentator says, “a large number” of Belarusians has “suddenly come to understand that to be a Russian speaker living outside of Russia is becoming dangerous,” given that Moscow will send “little green men” to “defend” them even without their asking.

On an NR2.com.ua blog today, Vadin Dovnar says that Ukraine has shown Belarusians that one’s own nation and national language can be sources of pride, sparking a volunteer movement in Belarus to train people there, many of whom speak Russian, their national tongue.

That has frightened some Belarusian officials who have moved to shut down such activities, but even if they succeed, they are unlikely to be able to bring Belarusians back to the Russia-centric worldview many of them had only a few weeks or months ago. Ukraine has changed that, Dovnar says.

Belarusians are now taking increasing pride in their language, their history, and their culture. Some are tattooing themselves with Belarusian symbols, others are putting Belarusian flags on their cards, and there have been cases “when Belarusians have stopped cars” sporting Russian national symbols.

Since last spring, even Alyaksandr Lukashenka has been changing his tune, Dovnar says, criticizing Russia and making other comments that can only please Belarusian patriots. But he is so much Moscow’s puppet that few really believe that he means what he says or that he will lead Belarus toward a better, freer and more Ukraine-like future.

But his words matter too because they open the way for others to discuss things and to prepare for “the arrival of times” when Belarusians will be able to replace him as the Ukrainians replaced the pro-Russian Yanukovych with someone more committed to the “Belarusianization” of Belarus and the Belarusian nation.

Darth Vader hopes force with him in Ukraine polls
By PETER LEONARD Associated Press5:29 a.m.Oct. 24, 2014

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — One candidate in Ukraine's parliamentary elections hopes to bring voters to the dark side: Darth Alekseyevich Vader.

Dressed in full Star Wars regalia, Vader prowls the streets of Kiev atop his black campaign van wooing voters with promises to turn Ukraine into a "galactic empire." So serious is he about his mission that he even legally changed his name to Darth Vader ahead of the elections (He was previously known as Viktor Shevchenko.)

The electrician-turned-interplanetary warlord insists his Internet Party is serious business.

Speaking to The Associated Press on his van, flanked by Stormtroopers and shrouded in white fumes, Vader explained that his top goal is to computerize all government business.

"When I get to parliament, I will expel all the deputies. They have proven their uselessness," he said. "Computers will work in their place and they will fulfil their functions without cease."

Pollsters predict the party, which also includes a Stepan Chewbacca on its list, has little chance of getting into parliament in Sunday's vote. Still, the public greets Vader enthusiastically when he drives around the capital atop his van — which he refers to as "my helicopter."

Despite his pledge to enhance transparency, Vader declines to ever show his own face. That got him banned from voting in May presidential elections by punctilious electoral commission workers who said he was violating voting rules.

Vader is not shying away from the thornier issues.

To the ominous backdrop of the Imperial March theme from Star Wars, he thundered from the top of his van that he would win the war against separatist rebels in the east — even as he withdrew government troops. And he vowed to reclaim the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in March.

How will he achieve these feats?

"A military space station will be built," he said, "that will protect the whole territory of Ukraine." Darth Vader hopes force with him in Ukraine polls | UTSanDiego.com

BBC: Russian clocks go back for last time
Oct. 25, 2014, 7:16 p.m. | Russia and former Soviet Union — by BBC

Russia will turn back its clocks for the last time on Sunday to permanently adopt winter hours.

It will also increase its time zones from nine to 11, from the Pacific to the borders of the European Union.

For the last three years, Russia experimented with keeping permanent summer time, but it proved to be highly unpopular with many Russians.

The Soviet Union introduced Daylight Saving Time in 1981.

In 2011, then President Dmitry Medvedev introduced measures to reduce Russia's time zones to nine, and to keep summer time all year round.

Russians put their clocks forward one hour but did not put them back in winter time.

Changing times in the seasons disrupted people's biorhythms and even upset cows, Mr Medvedev said.

However, many Russians in the north complained about darker mornings in winter.

At a news conference in Moscow, representatives of the Russian Academy of Sciences said that Europe would now be closer as the difference between the capital and Greenwich Mean Time would only be three hours.

The deputy director of the Geography Institute, Arkady Tishkov, said he was against the latest change because he believed it was carried out to please advertisers as it would result in, he believes, more people watching television.

When Crimea was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in March, Crimea's time was adjusted to match Moscow time (GMT +4). BBC News - Russian clocks go back for last time

The real loser in Ukraine’s election? Darth Vader
By Rick Noack October 27 at 1:17 PM WASHINGTON POST

On Sunday, Darth Vader failed in an attempt to be elected Ukraine's prime minister, unable to muster the votes despite a high-profile campaign. The aspiring politician had previously been known as Viktor Shevchenko, but he had his name changed to Darth Vader and also adopted the appearance of the "Star Wars" villain.

To add insult to injury, Darth Vader was not even allowed to vote. Fully embracing his new role, he had refused to take off his mask after being asked to do so by election officials, thereby incurring their wrath. He reportedly complained: "Here is my face on the passport. Where does the law say that I have to take off my mask?" But the officials did not budge. Multiple TV cameras documented the incident:

he episode marked the end of an campaign in which Darth Vader had prominently vowed to take on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Darth Vader is part of Ukraine's Internet Party, which has raised attention by registering its prime ministerial candidates as "Star Wars" villains.

Despite being dismissed by many opponents, some view the Internet Party's aims as legitimate. Among Darth Vader's main concerns has been the integrity of Ukraine's parliament. "When I get to parliament, I will expel all the deputies. They have proven their uselessness…. Computers will work in their place, and they will fulfill their functions without cease," Vader told the Associated Press.

Darth Vader is hardly the only one voicing such complaints. Last week, the Economist predicted:

The elections will not overhaul the system where deputies are the extensions of business interests and can be sold and traded. The new parliament is likely to be dominated by old faces wearing new masks.

The Ukrainian electoral system has been blamed for allowing people to practically "buy parliamentary mandates," and commentators expect some long-established deputies to play a significant role in the parliament, despite recent pro-Western shifts and the emergence of younger politicians.

Darth Vader will not be among them in the foreseeable future, but don't be surprised if he tries again to change Ukraine's political landscape. In May, for example, he unsuccessfully applied for the office of Kiev's mayor. Back then, he was often seen riding in a motorcycle sidecar.

For the October elections, Darth Vader changed his strategy and chose a black van to tour the streets.

Darth Vader also produced an advertisement showing him with a light saber and then kneeling down, dramatically picking up some soil.

uch videos have found a large international media echo and have helped Darth Vader gain more prominence, especially abroad, where he is better known than many of his more standard competitors. The real loser in Ukraine’s election? Darth Vader - The Washington Post

Clandestine casino network smashed in Kyiv
29.10.2014 | 14:12 UNIAN

Kyiv Prosecutor’s Office together with the police have halted the illegal activities of 30 gambling clubs operating in practically all of the districts of the capital, UNIAN has been told by the press service of the Kyiv Prosecutor’s Office.

The managers of the network, which operated under the King logo, pretended that it was connected to the state lottery.

A total of 180 policemen took part in the operation to smash the network, simultaneously carrying out 32 raids. The police confiscated nearly 1,000 pieces of gaming equipment, the press service said.

In addition, two computer server rooms were discovered. According to the latest information, the communication rooms were linked to a main server located in Moscow, Russia.

Police said they have launched a criminal investigation into the gambling ring under Part 1 of Articles 203-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (the gambling business).

In October alone, prosecutors together with the capital’s police managed to halt the activities of over 60 illegal gambling establishments. One-and-a-half thousand items of gaming equipment were confiscated, including slot machines, computers and other equipment.

As UNIAN reported earlier, there has been a ban on the gambling business in Ukraine since 2009, but the business has continued operating in the shadows.

Critics of the ban say the state no longer has any control over the business, and has lost out on the budget revenues that the business could have generated. Clandestine casino network smashed in Kyiv : UNIAN news
