To Be ROHS Compliant
RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is a set of environmentally-geared directives initiated by the EU (European Union). ROHS Compliant mandates controlled usage of harmful substances in electrical and electronic manufacturing processes. The listed substances have been identified as posing the most significant threats to worker safety in manufacturing procedures, and to the environment when goods containing these harmful substances are disposed of in landfills. Compliance with RoHS is necessary is mandatory for all businesses that manufacture or market their electrical and electronic products in the EU
To be successfully RoHS compliant what is required is an all encompassing effort, backed by dedicated management commitment. A good starting point is a "know your customer" program. This gives insight into customer requirements, both short and long-term. It investigates their conversion plans, transition period plans, future requirements of spares for existing leaded products, backward and forward compatibility, etc. The next important step is a company-wide inter-disciplinary compliance team, supported by a compliance mission statement and roadmap. The roadmap would include milestones for necessary conversions, retooling etc. It is extremely important to assess the company's supply chain exposure and to qualify its suppliers. The success of the compliance program will greatly depend upon the ability of suppliers to ensure RoHS compliance of the materials and components supplied by them. Therefore, supplier qualification is crucial. . If you are involved in the sale, manufacture or export or import of electric or electronic equipment or parts, you are likely affected by RoHS regulations and you should ensure compliance with RoHS.
