Oh and Michael, another huge turn off for me with US vehicles is how they give you a feeling you are in a rust bucked vs a new vehicle. Changing gears in Dodge SRT was an experience I will never forget, so sticky it was difficult. The interior clearly lacked quality feel to it... they are cheap here for a very good reason.

Volodya, I agree with the quality of American cars, its just not there. Panels that don't line up, paint that is peeling from the factory, I agree they leave alot to be desired. But on a kilo by kilo basis they still make a car that can race well with very little work.
In Australia we had a 24 hours race that cars from all over the world would race in, sort of like Le Mans but the cars were "factory" cars that were modified to race safely. The only car that really out did the Commodore/Monaro/GTO was the Mazda RX7 and that was because of its lightweight and excellent factory handling. I know the old GTOs were drag style cars but with the wide track and half way decent subframe they could be made to handle with out to much difficulty. Over here one of the "in things" with racing is Drifting. Now that is 95% Japanese cars. Things like Mazda RX7, Nissan Sylvia, Subaru WRX, Toyota Soarer etc. They choose these cars because of their very stiff framework that wont flex easily so they can flick the car into a slide and keep it there with smooth transitions when a change of direction is coming on another corner. |

Well they do come with big engines and usually rear wheel drive. That said, they are very unpopular here on a regular track, basically anything that has turns. If someone told me they wanted to build a cheap race car to just pass and get a racing licence ... I would recommend an older import over newer domestic even in the same price range, something like Nissan SX240 (Sylvia) is cheap and will do well... |
