Just finding threads I find interesting and adding little bits. Forgive me I'm a newbie.
With the question of genetics it is pretty hard to say what makes what in the modern world. From memory parts of Ukraine have been settled by people of many different origins. Some have already been mentioned but peoples who haven't been mentioned are various groups of Greeks, like Ionian , and Doric Greeks who setup trading centres on the coastlines of the ancient world, One such settlement is Chersonesos, near Sevastapol if I remember correctly.
I would also hazard a guess and suggest that various other ancient world groups such as Dacians and Moesians could have inhabited parts of Western Ukraine. They certainly inhabited what is now Romania. If this is the case then it is most certain that Roman colonists would have settled in this region as well and would have been absorbed into the native cultures when the Emperor decided to limit the Empires reach and pull back onto the western side of the Danube.
The Scots come from north-east Ireland, County Omagh iirc. The Romans named them Scotii when they encountered them in their raids of Roman Britain. The raided the west coast from northern Wales to the southern parts of western Scotland. In Ireland and Scotland they establish Dalriada (sp?) mixed with the Picti (Roman word that means painted people) in Scotland and the Strathclyde Welsh which is the group whom the person of Merlin (Myrrdin Emrys) is apparently from. The tale which links the Scots to Scythia was simply a story to link Pagan Ireland to the early Christian church, the usage of Andrew comes from that. The Scots are most certainly a Keltic group, there is also limited evidence to suggest the Picts are to.
