Most Eastern Europeans have had little contact with black people.

Blacks are a big surprise to your average Ukrainian, especially in provincial towns and villages, where kids might point fingers at a black person in excitement while exclaiming "Negr!"

Negr is the equivalent for Negro in Slavic languages, and should not be confused with "N*gg*r". Negr is what Slavs call Black people, even if they imply no offense.
As a child I lived in post WW2 Germany. The darkest skin people that I had ever seen were the Italians. One day I saw my first black man, a soldier. I was scared witless. I ran home and my father was there. He asked why I so frightened. I told him I had just seen the devil. Once I explained, he understood what I had seen. He sat me down and explained that God created people. He compared this to my mother's baking. The first ones, taken out of the oven too early were too light and some left in too long, came out very dark, but they were all still people.

æ, !
