The American Civil War killed both Southerners and Northerners, all Americans. Lincoln was a president who knew what separation would do to this country. The south fired the first shot and thus drew all Americans into a bloody war. I've never heard of Lincoln being called a "hero". He was a President who was very tolerant of all races and hated war. Watch the series "The Civil War" by Ken Burns. It gives you both sides of a war that killed far too many Americans.
